I find it amazing how these cars attract such attention. I'd be looking to get rid ASAP - perhaps leave it elsewhere or see if they can take it back early. No car is worth the hassle of a gang threatening your family. Get an old E39 M5 instead!
This situation completely puts me of owning a a Golf R. Is it the same sort of issues with the estate?

I’ve had two Golf Rs for a while now (one hatch, one estate) and they’ve never attracted any attention. Both are parked outside my house.

We have a ST Estate on the drive. Never had any unwanted attention I think.

But I would have thought it would attract similar attention albeit the Golf R being very fast.

Just park the Golf R on a neighbour's driveway.

That'll confuse them.
Not the neighbour with the CCTV though! He’ll be mighty pissed off to be woken by a masked gang at 3am demanding the keys

So they intended to drive his car with their heads out of the sunroof.
That's dangerous I can see why you'd call the police.

"There's this cop scoping for your, check it out"

What iconic film from 1991 is that quote from?

I can beat all that. My car got nicked from the drive, but with no key, they towed it up the road but it got stuck between kerb and parked cars. We think they were after my van on the drive, but they rather craply blokced their own route out with the van, as it is a cul de sac.
Anyway, it was reported as stolen, but obviously I parked it back on my drive and carried on using it. 2 weeks later I noticed it was out of MOT 5 months before, got it MOtd, thought it odd cops never said owt when i reported it as "nicked". But then it got even more weird. About another 3 weeks after, so 5 from the incident, plod called to say "sorry, despite extensive investigations and monitoring of ANPR, there was no sign of my stolen car at all". I'd done 1500 miles all round Uk in it been to Bradford in it twice and to Glasgow, and it was parked on my driveway!
When I pointed it out, and it was clear they were rumbled as having done fk all, they just started asking if my number plates were legal....

fking useless and the tea leaves know that.
laugh

My friend (called Paul) had his Whyte mountain bike nicked. It appeared on gumtree later that day. He messaged the seller, got an address e.t.c and gave it to the police....

Who did nothing. You can steal what you like in this country with no fear. Police aren’t interested unless it’s a minor motoring offence or you’ve racially abused someone on social media.

I'd still invest in a steering lock if I were you... Mine was taken off my drive in broad daylight while I was at work (rural village etc).

I looked at a Golf R, but ended up with a BMW 340i instead.

Just be wary about parking it somewhere else - if it does get TWOCed, if insurance company find out that it wasn't parked where you said it would typically be left overnight i.e. on your drive, that could give them cause to refuse the claim.

TWOC - Taken without owner's consent

I personally wouldn’t drive a lesser car on the off chance that the one I really wanted might one day get stolen...

Unless I lived up a mountain in the far north of Scotland there's frankly no way I'd even consider ownership of a Golf R, Audi RS thing, anything called an EVO/ST, M car etc etc. I'd be absolutely stressed to fk. The hassle of dheads wanting a "race" or whatever all the time would also do my head in.

Depends...

I owned a 3 Dr Cosworth back in the 90's when they were the car to steal.

It was alarmed, immobilized and I wheel clamped it and parked it in.

After doing this for a month and having sleepless nights as I'd wake up at the slightest sound - I sold it - simply not worth the hassle.

If you are the type who can accept theft and are happy to throw them your keys - good for you, but I'm unable to do that.

Did you get any details of the Lexus ?

Do you live near any large towns or cities, I would be looking for it, will be parked up somewhere, then go and leave some printed cctv pictures on it, or just set fire to it !

Am joking, ish.

UPDATE - we're alive and I drove to work this morning in my Golf.

Phone police last night, they noted the information and asked me to call them back if they return.

Plan of action - as there's only 6 weeks left on the lease I'm going to ask it goes back asap. In the meantime, I'm going to speak to the fleet manager at work and see if I can borrow a company car, which will probably be nicer than the Golf but diesel and dump the Golf in my parking space at work - secure multi-storey car park containing far nicer cars than a Golf.

Wife is fairly relaxed about the whole thing - she's a keeper, but we did leave all car keys next to the front door and took hockey sticks to bed with us.

However, my wife has just thoroughly cheered me up - she wasn't keen on the 540i and has this morning sent me a link to a Honda Jazz for sale locally.

Invest in a pen and paper.

Write a note " To the gentlemen in the white Lexus (VRN if you have it) seen an CCTV at Date/Time(s), you details have been passed to the police. If any damage to or theft of my property occurs, you will be the first port of call".

Also laminate a large printed note of the Lexus VRN. Attach it to the lamp posts in the cul-d-sac.

Give the impression of increased risk to the suspected scrotes. If they think they have been rumbled, they will move on to an easier target, if they haven't already done so. Lets be honest, last night they were looking at your car, tonight it might be someone else's.

Are there actually that many of these being stolen relative to the amount that are out there? If a couple of hundred of them have been stolen obviously that's terrible but if there is ten thousand of them out there your not exactly taking your life in your hands by owning one.

Is this a localised thing?

I bought my wife an estate a year ago and nothing has happened and you simply don't hear about it in my part of the world.

I woke this morning and realised I had left it unlocked with the keys in it lol. Maybe I'm just very lucky.
