It's a daft idea, quite brilliant, but I do think it loses a bit of appeal by being an in-house factory job rather than some lunatic in his shed.

I did think to myself back when I first heard about the Cygnet that AM should have done a tie-up with BMW to produce a luxurious 1-series-based RWD hatchback (perhaps with the V8!) as a sort-of-successor to the Panther Rio (Jankel's tarted-up Triumph Dolomite), and maybe stuck the less powerful 4.3 V8 in a restyled Z4 as an entry-level sub-Vantage sports car. Oh, and maybe an AM Mini with the BMW 1.6 straight-six bike engine?

Supercharged MR2 engine? A hillclimb car, not road legal, and it did have 'issues' on launch

Agreed. More recently they've just been tasked with adding stripes, badges or coloured stitching so this nonsense is a great break from that sort of nonsense.
