2.8 tons? With all the technology of light weight materials, in this day and age
Now imagine what it'd weigh without that.Just 700kg payload (including obligatory pluted bloatocrats) before it hits the 3.5t GVW limit...

Why anyone would splash out £250k plus options on that monstrosity is mind boggling.
Because a Bentaygo is just too cheap and too common.Mackofthejungle said:
Take the family on a 300 mile drive, if you're family is no more than 4 people.
It baffles me how car manufacturers haven't sussed out the middle seat idea yet. It's always an afterthought. If a Berlingo can manage it (and to be honest, a Berlingo probably rides better than this too) then why can't posh family cars like this? Because that's what one has to assume it is? It's a car for a wealthy family...right?
And if you're single, or perhaps have a partner and a kid, or you're retired and your kids have left, but you want luxury with the ability to carry some people or "things" from time to time....where's the 4.2m Rolls hatchback? At £100k? Why can't manufacturers fill this gaping hole in the market?! Why is bigger always better in the world of cars?! It's fking stupid.
Saloons? Oh yes, they start at 15 grand and go to Rolls Royce. 4x4s? Oh yes, 15 grand to Rolls again. Sports cars? MX5s to the moon. Estate cars? Again, cheap as you like, or 100 grand plus (granted, for some reason this barrier hasn't truly been broken...) But hatchbacks? (and I mean proper 5 door hatches, not a Ferrari you can technically class as one) No no no, they're cheap. They have to be cheap. Despite being utter practical, well sized for 1 or for 5 people and having big boots...they have to be cheap. Cheapest. Small is cheap for some reason. Utterly baffling. It's an Americanism the world can't get over. Look what happened when Land Rover brought out the Evoque - a total success. Same size as a golf. The only exception, and nobody else has followed it up. Lunacy. There's huge money waiting to be made.
Anyway, what was this article about again?

Middle seats are often superfluous. Personally, I'd rather take better use of that space to make the two rear seat passengers more comfortable. When I got the QV, it only has 2 seatbelts in the back - perfect for me, we only have one child, and by only being able to carry four people, we don't get lumbered with the in-laws as often.....I'd pay extra for that benefit!
On the high-quality, £6-figure hatchback, there isn't the market. You cite the Evoque as an example (and it has been copied, by everyone). But the bulk of Evoque drivers aren't former FFRR drivers downsizing, they are people that had a normal car moving up to get into the baby-Range Rover. The only difference is possibly the Macan where, from what I was told by Porsche when I test drove one, almost 50% of owners already have a 911 in the family, and this is a second/wife's car.
...and as for "Berlingo probably rides better than this too"..... you must really either hate people who can afford six-figure cars, or be part of Momentum.

Jon Olsson has the right idea. There would be something quite comical and obnoxious in taking a Rolls and having it fully fitted out with expedition racks, raised suspension and knobbly tyres then Go trashing through the desert/outback/Russian tundra in it.
Whoever he is, it's hardly an original idea...Both from the 1970 London-Mexico City World Cup Rally. Both retired, but so did another 78 of the 106 entrants...

Because a Bentaygo is just too cheap and too common. When a medium sized saloon now weights 2-tonnes, the extra 800kg for this isn't that comical.

But I'd disagree that Rolls Royces have always been an 'ostentatious display of wealth'.
