Rubbish - whilst I accept I can't afford to buy one of these, I've previous owned significantly bigger than this. I now dislike these massive barges clogging our roads.

It's not about money.

Please don’t misunderstand me as I was never insinuating that you were too poor to afford one all I was saying is that why would someone ‘settle’ on a Ford SMax/Galaxy when they easily justify the expense of owning a BMW SUV with off-roading connotations?

I’m intrigued as to what you may have previously owned which could be classed as ‘bigger’ and if it’s ownership led to your biased against them “clogging up our roads”. In such regards would you have a pop at someone who drove a Mondeo as opposed to a Focus or even a Fiesta as you perceive it to be “too big” for purpose?

Not comparable with the RR Cunnilingus.

This is aimed at Range Rover drivers.

If I were in the market for this type of thing I'd get one over a Range Rover. At least you know it will work.
A BMW badge is no way a guarantee of a working vehicle.

I don't mind anybody saying I am too poor to spend £72k (minimum) on a new car, I tend to agree. Although I could buy one if I chose, it would be a massively disproportionately expensive thing for my means - so I guess I am too poor.

That was the main focus on my post. Secondary, I am not a great fan of the trend for bigger and heavier vehicles. There image of occupant safety encourages poor driving (This isn't aim at you!) and makes the road more dangerous for pedestrians and other road users. Many are driven with a "get out of my way" manner. Like it or not, this world has finite resources and in the SE at least limited room.

I guess I can see when you go on hols, with 4 kids for a long distance, this car might be justifiable, I suspect that 90% of mile these do will be with either one driver, or to the school. Huge excess seems something we shouldn't encourage given the constraints will all live in.

How many people who buy these will have 4 kids?

My previous vehicle was a ChevyVan Tiara Presidential. Absolutely massive and I can't deny the joy of looking down on Range Rovers and other full size 4x4.
here's a pic of a similar vehicle.

I did take 4 kids (not all mine) from London to Cornwall on Hols and as per your suggestion it was a fantastic way to travel. Cornish Roads, having to pay for a coach parking space in Padstow and 12mpg were less positive! I sold it after a single (but amusing) year, so I think I am that reformed smoker - very disdainful of those who do as I did.

A mondeo is efficiently packaged - a luxury 4x4 isn't.

I also think that grill is Fugly wink

It's certainly pretty ugly on the outside, but the interior looks really great. I've had a few Chevy Suburban rentals in the US and the concept of giant 7-seat SUV with a big boot actually works very well and is a really useful vehicle. I'm not sure this is as big as the Chevy though, and is probably costlier than even an Escalade ESV.

Don't know about you, but after a while I don't notice the interior of my cars much, as tend to be looking outside!

The exterior however is seen all the time on approach.

As large as they are, its probably the closest we'll get to the Cadillac Escalade. It is time for a very big SUV, and BMW have an offering. Will be on the list for us in 10 years time!

The amount of doughnuts commenting that it’s an ‘unnecessary vehicle’ are, clearly, those that neither have the family or the finances to own one. That’s not to say they aren’t entitled to an opinion but I can almost guarantee it’ll change once they find themselves with four kids and a partner to COMFORTABLY haul about (emphasis on the word ‘comfort’)
I’ve already got my name down for one ,albeit in completely blacked out M-sport guise, to replace our trusty 7 seater X5.
Sorry, but it's a car for tts.

Having used a current X5 for a while for continental travel, I don't blame you. A brilliant choice indeed. Plus it really upsets the chip on shoulder type o n PH, so why not ?

I am all for choice anyway, the more the better, no one has to buy one.

It just looks like a massive stripy ar*e stuck on the front.
And people moan about Lexus grilles, an RX looks as svelte as an e-type next to this!
Maybe they should just sell it in China, so we never have to see it.

I can't decide which is ugliest: this, the Rolls Cullinan, or the Bentayga.

I've just decided: it's this. What the fk! Who would look at that and think "yes, this is a good looking car and I would like to be seen in one!".
No, I can't afford one. And no, I wouldn't buy one even if I had unlimited cash in my wallet.
