mandatory speed limiters to be fitted from 2022?
Discussion
The idea whereby we call an autonomous car on the phone. I used to think that was where it would end up.
Really though, what that is, is an attempt at making an existing model (personal transport) fit a new world.
Why do we need to do that at all? Let people keep personal transport and pretty much like it is now, no autonomy crap but perhaps restrict when they can be used.
Fix the system that worked many years ago, a big vehicle which carries many people from one place to the next. You could almost have autonomous ones, that run on rails.
Currently admittedly, if you live in the countryside you're bksed but I don't think the 'pod' will want to come out all that way either.
You have to go everywhere via the city centre. With less cars on the road for the weekly drudgmute they could have more of these large multi-person carriages going to more places.
The two issues are the country folk and how do you get the lazy bds from their front door to the pickup point and from the drop off point to work.
It's far from perfect but worked once
Ultimately my commute is incredibly dull, I try to brighten it up by changing and buying different cars often but I would be quite happy to use one of these multi-person vehicles if they were more frequent and reliable and then keep my personal car for weekend stuff.
On topic, speed limited cars. This all sounds quite crap. I bought a brand new car for only the second time in my life just last year. I rather like trouble free (so far) easy budget motoring but I will be due to change late 2022. That's buggered that.

Again, governments take an overly simplistic view of, (and attempt to apply a high tech solution) to, road safety. If speed were really the problem, most fatalities and injuries would be sustained on "fast" roads. The last stats I saw showed that not to be the case.
s?
Yup the motorway is the safest road to be on. I seem to recall a figure of about three percent of mortalities are on motorways.s?
Majority on towns but less used rural roads are suspect.
Lots of under 25’s
Fair number of motor bikes.
Pedestrian children killed by speed , almost none at all.
However something like 80/90 percent of all pedestrian accidents are caused by the pedestrian
As for cars ,drivers over 25 years old , at speed on a motorway, chances are petty good! Just don’t do it in the fog! Makes you wonder if those speed cameras around the m25 operating 24/7 are to raise money or save lives... I wonder....
What all the figures don’t mention, it is is a lot about what you hit, a tree /lamppost at 30 mph and u are going to hurt/die. A ditch or fence at 90 mph , you may walk away. So all this tree planting to hide the horrid new road, was a real killer!
You can email the current Secretary of State for Transport about this, and any other issues, directly at the address clearly displayed in his recent tweet to the EU about flight landing allocations, and repeated clearly in this article on the BBC.

Good luck.

New to the forum and this is my first posting.
Here in the US they will be limiting the top speed of large trucks soon, so cars and motorcycles won't be far behind.

I believe the real issue is in all the attempts being made to reduce the number of road fatalities attributed to high speed, and then questioning why anyone can buy and drive on the public roads a vehicle that can travel at over 200mph.

Could be the thin edge of the wedge.

A very sad case but I'm not sure that restrictions on speed would've prevented much here. So they'll then see how quick they can get to 70 and how long they can maintain 70 through twisty bitshttps://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/cars/judge-cal...

So limit the top speed to 55 for learners and 70 mph for everyone else. I know they can still easily kill at that speed, but at least the government would be showing that it's trying to do something to cut down on the carnage.

Even though most accidents occur in town, very small % of accidents are motorway accidents....
Drivel. They haven't ever any safety device retrospective. ABS and airbags have become standard nowadays but old cars don't need them.
Pre 1993 cars don't require catalytic converters, pre 1965 cars don't even require seatbelts. Rear seatbelts didn't become compulsory fitment until 1987.

A black box can be fitted to any car less than 22yo. Fair enough, that exempts a few old fast cossies etc, but I bet it covers 98% of what is currently on the road. I'm sure exemptions can be made on certain cars, but I would expect some kind of mandatory device in the years to come, should it become standard for new cars. I might be wrong, but it's not something I'll be surprised to find out once those wedges get wider.Pre 1993 cars don't require catalytic converters, pre 1965 cars don't even require seatbelts. I won’t mind them limiting cars since it means I can’t any longer get speeding fines. Probably going to make driving more boring but so long as they don’t limit how fast you can accelerate to the limit it shouldn’t be too depressing.
Until you come across grandma doing 40 in the nsl, or encounter a 20 mph town etc etcEdited by SSWGB on Tuesday 7th April 15:02
