Strangely the manual cars did not sell well, and the reviews of the transmission at the time were not glowing. I got used to the SMG and as long it was not is automatic mode it was possible to use the paddle shift to change gear smoothly.I wonder how much better they are seeing as everybody thinks the SMG is pants.

I've read a few reviews of each and they criticise the gearbox for having poorly matched ratios - the V10 engine and high rev concept was designed from the outset to only be offered with a 7 speed sequential, with ratios chosen appropriately. I wonder how much better they are seeing as everybody thinks the SMG is pants.

Fitting the same baulky gearbox as the E39 M5 used and it's very different power curve and max rpm changed the character of the car substantially and not for the better. A lesson in sometimes not bowing to consumer pressure, because they're often wrong. That, or BMW M Division know what they're doing when designing clean sheet powertrains.
Never had a problem with SMG in either E46 or E6x iterations, just drive it as a manual, little lifts when upshifting, little blip when down and it smooths out. The lack of creep for manoeuvring and on car park ramps is a bit of a faff (no more so than in a manual), but you adapt soon enough.

Completely disagree as regards to value they have been steadily increasing. obviously low mileage well look after examples that is . You can always buy a st box of any marquee car cheap enough but you pay the full price in a round about way .

A manual box attached to the S85 goes against its ethos. A DCT conversion would be better.
Had a drive (as a passenger) in one of these last year. It was a Silverstone Blue one for sale locally.
This one still had the original BMW warranty, which would have been transferred over to me. High spec, with extended leather to the dash, which made the otherwise cheap feeling interior feel a lot better.
Sounded lovely when it was on song through the country lanes, and was a lot smoother than I imagined it would be.
And even though it was quick, it just didn't feel quick, if that makes sense. Was waiting for my E39 M5 to sell, hence why I couldn't go through with the purchase. Now that felt a lot more raw and mechanical in comparison.
Even though it is rarer, I still prefer the E60 M5. Was a choice between this an the 63 AMG, but ended up with the AMG as wasn't brave enough for the V10's antics!
Definitely want to own and experience one in the future. Bad ones will be scrapped by then, and good ones will no doubt rocket in value.

You have some awesome metal there sir!Out of curiosity - once these have been rebuilt, I assume with uprated parts, are these engines then reliable going forward, or will they still encounter similar issues as before?

I've driven a couple of M cars with DCT gearboxes and while objectively brilliant, took a huge amount of enjoyment away.
Looks like this car is for sale again.....
