I think I understand the appeal of the Capri model, given when it was launched in the UK during the 1960’s there were very few competitors. I often read references about the Capri to the US Mustang but I’m not informed enough to know if a 1.3, 1.6 or even 2.0 L engine was offered in the Mustang.
Did the parent company think the UK market couldn’t handle more power and torque?
I had a half hearted look at buying a 2.8 injection which was only a couple of years old but was instantly put off when the drivers door dropped in my hand on opening. Not a patch on VW build quality in the day.
A guy at work needed to put a 3’x2’ paving stone in his boot during the winter to try to keep the wheels from sliding out.
Form over function I’d say.

It made a huge impact when it was launched. Britain was a very different country then - it wasn't all mini-skirted dollybirds and Beatles songs - and we didn't really do frivolity , especially on the road. Lots of folk modified their cars but most buyers of standard models were serious , earnest folk who bought dull as ditch water, sensible cars like Hillman Hunters and Austin 1100s . Even the much vaunted Lotus Cortina not only sold in tiny numbers but was nearly indistinguishable from a standard car , But the Capri was sexy, absurdly long bonnet nodding to an E -Type, reclining driving position, sexy Rostyle wheels and lots of dials. It sold by the shedload - the car equivalent of flared trousers, Jason King cool over John Mills sobriety

I would love something like that but £45k for a Capri with a Windsor engine? Way too steep (but aren’t they all).

Thousands of Basil Green V8 Perhana Capris in South Africa.
Had the V8, a couple of V6, and not forgetting the 2 liter V4.
Little mention.
The V4 pistons can replace a holed V6 piston !

It needs the famous cheese grater on the back window for full Capri effect. Great project, not my cup of tea, for £45 large I'd buy a nice V8 Vantage.

The V4 is a V6 with two cylinders removed. 1700 V4 is the same bore and stroke as the 2.5 V6 and the 2.0 V4 as the 3.0 V6. The block casting for the V6 even has the casting for the balance shaft that is fitted to the V4.

Always liked Capris, my pal had a 3.0S with Janspeed exhaust and headers. Sounded excellent so can only imagine how good this would be with a V8 yes
I remember pulling up at the lights next to a Capri 3.0S in my 2.9 Sierra XR4x4 once, and the 3.0S sounded lovely, whereas the V6 Cologne engine even with the twin K&N's and the full Magnex stainless exhaust that I put on it sounded so limp in comparison. I wanted an Essex V6 after that big time for sure! cool
Number 27 Jack has done a YouTube video on a 3 litre Ghia. He said the Essex V6 sounded V8 like to him.

I think the total number of Basil's Perana was around the 500 mark.
125 a year over a four year run.
They were always a very limited production run.

This capri is lightweight, I had a 2 litre S that some woman in a metro ran into on a set of crossroads in York where I live, head on as tried to get a right turn but I was going straight over. Folded the bumper, front edge of bonnet, front valance and nearside wing ballooned outwards. Yes I was pi*#Ed off, my pride n joy. But in back of my mind was, now time to customise. I found a full ford triple x rs body kit, complete, I already owned a written 1978 daimler double six, that ran like a kitten, in English, was a 5.3 V12i, took some doing but shoehorned that lump up front, with working injection system, full body kit on, ext3nsive remodelling and manufacture of my own engine and gearbox mounts, already had the 9'' lsd rear end. If anyone sees it. Its reg was A130 LWR. I was a full member of cci at the time, now I'm going back 34 yrs or so. Probably doesn't exist anymore but who knows. I've got a 3.6 daimler sovereign, that's F reg and slow written, but runs mint with 121thou on, I'm looking for capri.

This is on ebay for £16k. Imported from South Africa and has a 350 Chevy. No details about the suspension or brakes, so may need a few thousand spent on it. I'd also want twin headlights, if they can still be found. I think I'd also fit a roots type blower, like I used to have.

Does it come with the obligatory bag of cement in the boot to keep that wayward rear in check?

The writer needs to watch some Minder reruns.
Terry's Capri's were never 'bangers '.
The 2.0S in the opening credits wasn't even due a MOT when the series started in October 1979.

PS
The Capri was Corsair based, it has a longer wheelbase than a Cortina Mk2.
However as the Corsair was an enlarged Cortina Mk1 floor pan we'll let that slip.

Capris remind me of the BMW 635 CSI. I'd rather have (and did) the beemer. It was a much better car and didn't have the 'Minder' / 'del boy' image problem. I imagine head-to-head there wouldn't be much difference in ultimate performance between the two cars (assuming the Capri was a similar spec and not a 1.3)
I'll have some of what you are smoking!

I bought a 1982 Capri 2.8i in 1984 for £2K less than my GFs boss paid for his 1982 E30 323i.

635 CSi prices were in a different league!

My first 2 cars were Capris (or 'crapi' as my sister kept calling it), the first one a 1.6gl that I swap in a full 2.8injection interior from a wrecked car(after washing off the blood ) fitted a full XX pack ( I was 17, subtle wasn't a thing) along with a fake exhaust to pretend it wasn't a 1.6! little did I know that sometime in the future car companies would also be putting fake exhausts on to look more impressive!
Funny thing my sisters boyfriend pulled me over once letting me know my engine was about to blow because it was smoking from only 1 exhaust pipe....

second one I had that same rear spoiler people don't seem to like in the comments here, its an official ford part form the RS kit they did for the capri,
On mine I 'balanced it out' with the front RS spoiler that was also pretty large/deep, oh, it also wore the fake exhaust as it was also a 1.6 due to insurance costs

now, 35years on, I really quite fancy another capri, id prefer the special half leather interior and like this red car, would like the to add the x pack, the rear spoilers well as the front spoiler like my last capri.

Engine wise, I wonder if the capri would suit an electric conversion, as in 3l or 2.8 not not very quick by todays standard, that or maybe a coyote would fit, I live in New York now, so I like the US connection

actually this is pretty perfect for me, minus all the turbo badges....

Always liked the looks of the Capri as a kid growing up in the 70's. My second car was a cool looking Mk II 1.6 GT Sky blue with vinyl roof.
If ever their was a case of never meet your hero's though. Worst handling car i've ever driven. Had it checked out & geometry & suspension was as it should be. It just rolled & drifted terribly in the twisty bits. Id rather push a wheel barrow then get behind the wheel of one of these again.

wondered how long it would take before the "my mate put a bag of cement /paving stone in the boot" comment came up... not long obviously!
