This is a chance to pitch your best shot against The Stig. The leaderboard will compare with Top Gear's.

I'm amazed by the moany posts, this could be a great laugh!

So where will the leaderboard be posted? Has anyone else actually booked yet?

I'll be booking as soon as the new crank's gone in to the racecar. Be interesting to see how it compares to the TG supercars.

Completely agree - I'm looking forward to seeing how my 997GT3 compares with the TG Leaderboard - although it will be hampered by me driving rather than the Stig. Mind you when TG test one I'll really find out how bad I am! Er, perhaps it's not such a good idea after all..............

I think this is a great idea. If you put a stop watch on someone round a track they'll give it everything, so it'll definitely be competitive, and in that sense serious. But for the life of me I don't see how this would stop it being fun.

I'm a competitive person, but I don't give a damn that there will be faster cars that will beat me in my Westy. I'd hope to beat some of the faster cars, and I'd also hope that some of the slower ones don't beat me. If I have some spare cash over the next few months I'd definitely give this a go.

idea Are Top Gear interested in featuring this escapade? As a replacement slot to "Star in a Shitbox" this would be FAR more entertaining.

I for one will be doing it next yr probably just before my service as Plans do my car.

I want to do it to compare myself to the stigs time in the same car also I have the same car as some people on the list who I know can drive, this gives another comparison to show how S**t I am and how much more training I need.

I'm not bothered whos quicker or slower.

I found this post quit interesting. It reminded me of a frequent discussion I used to have with my father.

He used to bitch about the prices in his local shop.

My take on it was that if he didn't think the prices were reasonable then he should go elsewhere. If a lot of people did so, either the shopkeeper would be driven out of business to make way for someone else or he might rethink his pricing structure. I also tried to point out that some of the customer base might have believed that the elevated prices were justified by the convenience.

The old man remained resolute. He reckoned that business had a duty to pitch at his perception of value.

My overriding thought was that I didn't see the point of him getting worked up about it. He had enough to worry about at the time.

My view on this offer? Well, if I have cause to be down south with a suitable car in tow, I'll be enquiring as to availablility. I also think it's an interesting initiative in the spirit of this site.

If, however, I thought it was a rip off, I wouldn't waste energy on putting finger to key. I've bigger things to worry about.

Just my 2p worth ...

Cheers,

Eric

p.s. forgive me if there are spelling mistakes in the above; I've lost my specs and can't see the screen very well.

I think this is a great idea. I presume the layout is identical to the one TG use?

What fun to be able to compare oneself against Ben C... I mean, The Stig!

I'll have a go, but it's just a shame my car will be tuned by then as it won't be a straight comparo. Having said that there is no way one of us, with a couple of hours practice at the track is going to get anywhere near to Stiggie's times in the same car.
Not only is he a very skillful professional racing driver, he has done countless thousands of laps around that circuit by now.

But the thing that makes this unique, is that your time will be independently recorded and posted on a public board and everybody has an idea of what a quick lap of that track is having watched TG.
Bravo Ted!

I think that's it. During the winter we can easily get a full track day for £99. But it is unfair to compare this to a track day. It would be more accurate to compare it to a sprint, which is what it is. Most sprints are around £100 and you typically get around four runs, and no tuition. So if you think of this as a sprint with an hour's tuition, it's excellent value.

You can't compare this to trackdays or any other driving experience for that matter. I can't think of anywhere you can go and:

1. Get personal one to one track tuition
2. Have a thrash around an (almost) private test track used by a top rated TV prog
3. Be timed doing it (all trackdays ban timing)
4. Be able to objectively compare your performance against others

The objective part is pretty unique (apart maybe from Palmersport days) because most of the time all we can walk away from a trackday or driving experience with is a scorecard with a subjective score and a few comments from the instructors. And if they include a DVD of the driving and a leaderboard then there's some extra value built in anyway, which certainly has a cost associated with it.

With the Stig and Top Gear association Dunsfold has (not to mention the chance of seeing an SLR close up while you're there) it's a very original package and I think PH & Plans shouldn't be put off by a few people who think the meaning of the word 'value' is 'cheap'.

Anything involving cars, tracks (and therefore, insurance) is expensive to organise and risky from a business perspective so anyone who does this should be encouraged and those moaning about the format or price should go and organise something better and cheaper or shut up.
