Given the rules are in and will probably be here for the foreseeable futue (I'm not in any way defending them!!!!) - the future might not be so bad - BMW has proved that you can make lower emissions performance cars.....until Gordon and his cronies latch onto something else!

The issue of cars already on the road is however a disgrace and as someone has already mentioned - this will lead a lot of cars to an early grave through crippled residuals - and that doesn't sound too green to me!

I was idly wondering this morning, in a period of relative calmness about the state of the nation, that Labour no longer seem to care who they piss off, so perhaps, realising the utter, utter fk up they've made of the economy (and, frankly, everything else as well), maybe they don't want to be re-elected and would prefer to run away and hide, leaving the mess for the Tories to sort out. (Like last time). Likely? I dunno.... scratchchin

I suspect you have hit the nail on the head.

Let us hope that "unelectable in 2010" will be followed by "unemployable thereafter" for these thieving, communist, st-bags.

I suspect there's quite a few of those, though!

I've got a 96 Griff and a 93 Volvo... fk 'em, they won't be getting replaced by anything newer than 2000 for a very long time.

Do we think this is going to increase the value of barge bargains?
But how long until they go for older cars as well? I have a 92 Griff and only do a few 1000 miles a year, I just hope they leave us alone. Don't forget Kens £25 CC will include older cars over 3000cc, may be the VED people will follow suit?

It isn't the first time that the tax has been introduced retrospectively. I bought a Subaru Impreza WRX brand new in November 2006 and the government sh*fted me on road tax in the budget of March 2007. I replaced the Subaru with a BMW 530 diesel M Sport immediately after the budget and have been retrospectively shafted for road tax on this now as it increases from £175 in March 2009 to £280 in March 2010. Now this might not sound like a lot but it is the final nail in the coffin for depreciation of these cars. I reckon that mine has lost £9000 in 13 months / 17,000 miles due to increased fuel (diesel in particular) costs and the road tax and the car had already taken a £17,000 hit on depreciation from new when I bought it at 2 years and 4 months old!!!

And are taken in by 'HEADLINE SPIN' tactics that make them feel smug that they don't have or are not about to buy a big 'Gas Guzzling 4x4' and are therefore not affected at all by the budget changes to car tax...

Whats even worse is that PM Brown charges us, the taxpayer, for his TV licence!

This government needs shifted out quick.

Remember its local elections on Thursday so get out and VOTE!

Cheers

Let's start a campaign............

Everyone fill in the form for a refund on their car tax in November 2009.
Apply immediately for new tax starting in Dec 2009.

We will:
1/ Lose a little on the previus tax.
2/ Pay the lower rate for 11mths of 2010.
3/ Cause the DVLA to grind to a halt as they will not cope with the demand for either refunds or new tax requests.
4/ Never be able to cope with the fact that 24mio vehicles will always be taxed in the same month every year!

The budget was in march ffs! Why is everyone complaining now?
Because now it has only just become apparant that cars registered after March 2001 will be affected.

Before it was cars registered in 2002 onwards and the 2001 cars were ok...
Since the budget; it's been about '2001 and on' cars, search google for Parkers Tax Guide.

Ok...

I don't think of myself as particularly stupid but I am utterly confused. Can someone spell it out for me.

The new tax rules will be applied to pre-2001 cars too? Is that right? If so, why was the magic 2001 number being talked about?

Is it the case that the orginal bands are staying the same and that the price is going up?

Sorry for being dim.

I thought any tax changed covered any car that they have emission details for, i.e from when the reg plates changed.

My 20 year old import is looking all the more pimp!

I also thought it was pretty clear that it applied from 2001 onwards. I thought the response was a bit muted. There are going to be a lot of people in for a *very* nasty shock next March.
