RE: PH Heroes: Renault Clio V6 255

I drove a 255 this year and liked it but was nowhere near as imppressed as I thought I would be. It didn't feel very fast and the torque felt surprisingly weak unless your ringing it's neck. I can imagine the 255 being extremely competent however in say 2/3rd gear, keeping it at high revs and feeding throttle into and out of a series of bends (i.e track driving).
My main gripe was that I could not find a way of turning the traction control off, which p---ed me off, as it was a real hinderance.
nice little article there...had to nip out for a quick drive on my lunch there, and as usual loved every minute of it!My main gripe was that I could not find a way of turning the traction control off, which p---ed me off, as it was a real hinderance.

But in regards to turning the traction control off...the v6 doesnt have traction control!

eh??! What traction control? Sure you drove a Clio V6? lolMy main gripe was that I could not find a way of turning the traction control off, which p---ed me off, as it was a real hinderance.

Yes, I drove an o5 plate blue 255 Clio V6 which had traction control, so that if the rear end even had the slightest twitch, the power was cut, and at the same time the orange ESP style light illuminated on the dash. Especially irritating around roundabouts. I spoke to the dealer who told me it could not be turned off...
I had a 'play' with a V6 Clio a few years ago when I had my 147 Gta. I was coming back from Dorset after New Years and one went flying past me on a dual carriageway. We both got to a roundabout where he had to stop, so we hit the next straight togther. Have to say it was quite a breeze to power past the Clio - and the driver was definately trying. Oh, and my car was three up and full of luggage.
Not knocking the Clio though, as I think mad cars like this should be savoured.

the vee doesnt have traction control, neither model.
that flashing light on the dash would of most prob been the brake fluid light, it does that when the fluid is low and you go round a corner.
in performance terms they are very similar to an r32/focus rs in my experience - ive owned a mk1 for nearly a year now.
they are not really fast cars, but not exactly slow either, they are alot of fun!!!
id imagine the ground clearance of a v6 is as bad as/worse than the lowered boxter, it does not like speedbumps!!! you have to crawl over them. transitions in car parks have to be taken at angles sometimes too.

Im slightly concerned by all this, I am by no means an expert on the Clio V6 but I must say that the one I drove did have some sort of ESP aswell as a dash illuminary to show when it ws being activated.
I don't know how to put it really, but here are the facts:
-The car was an 05 blue 255 V6 with 1 previous owner at 25k miles
-I was given it for an hour to play with
-In that time I had a good play and very soon on I realised that on the limit, power was cut from the rear wheels
-I was surprised and tested this out on a roundabout by progressivley learning the limit and flooring it in circles. I found that at the slightest twitch of oversteer and before what you would deem the critical moment of throttle lift off, the car would cut the drive itself, thus preventing what it thought was certain doom
-This cut off was accompanied by the typical yellow flashing ESP light within the dash
-I tried to turn off the traction control but was amazed that there was no function to do so.
-I spoke at length with the dealer who confirmed that the passive TC could not be turned off***
Cant say much more really.

- *Maybe the V6 has a dormant TC system that kicks in only when you push it to the limits. I know that when I and turn my ESP off, as in many other cars, it is till there at around 15% and ready to kick in at the last moment when things get really hairy...
it defintely isnt slower than 172/182, ive had numerous runs with them.
the vee pulls away off the mark better, is faster mid range and markably faster when you hit a hundred beans.
however its far less of a challenge to drive a 1*2 quickly round a track so doesnt suprise me people are quicker in them there!

Recently had to sell my 3rd Vee to fund a house move and I'm still in mourning. She managed everything from commuting to shopping to tracking and put a grin on my face every time I looked at her.
So maybe Vees aren't the quickest, or the best handling, but they win hands down in the fun stakes.
btw isn't that Vee in the pics liquid yellow not acid?

I've admired the bonkers Clio V6 ever since I randomly saw one in a Renault showroom when accompanying a friend to test drive a normal clio.
Allways wanted to give one a proper drive, i'm not going to go and test pilot some poor guys though like others may do, is there any where I can drive one, perhaps a track day event that has one?

I remember clear as day when 'our' mk2 showroom car arrived. I was in charge of booking the car in and getting it cleaned for the showroom. So on went the trade plates and a quick run to the petrol station.
WOW! every journey was an event in that little car, properly quick if i had one complaint its that Renaultsport didn't give the car a smaller steering wheel (thats my gripe with all the 172/182/v6's)
Never driven a Mk1, seen a few pass through the workshop tho. But i still didnt get the joy of selling one (my colleague at the time sold 3 or 4 i can't quite remember)
I'm just sad i dont work for Renault any more (Twingo 133 sob...) but im glad i did when they produced so many mad cars (Avantime/Vel Satis/Clio V6).

I've wanted one of these babies ever since I drove one at Upper Heyford RAF base near Bicester, which is now a secure compound for c 10,000 cars awaiting delivery to dealers. It was a phase II in Illiad Blue, (not 'cup' or Illiard) brand new on a 53 or 04 plate. I floored it up the runway and was doing 60/70 in easily 5-6 secs; from that day I was in love with the PII V6 and vowed to own one one day.
The 40mm extra width on the chassis coupled with the extra 23mm on the wheelbase sets it apart from the PhI, as does the fact that it was all Renaultsport. TWR made such a pig's ear of the PhI - assembling the main car in Dieppe and then having it finished off in Sweden, (I believe) that they had to make the PhII the car it should've been in the first place.
The difference between Liquid (featured car) and Acid is that the Liquid is a solid butter-looking colour, whereas Acid is lighter, metallic, and a bit more subtle. Black is the best colour imho.

Visit www.v6Clio.net - there's been regular discussion on the various exhaust options but in summary:
Quicksilver
Quicksilver OMG (Very loud, resonant at 3k)
K-Tec
K-Tec full system i.e. manifolds
Orbisoud (I think there may be a group buy going on for these)
Custom
Expect to pay anything from around £750 new. Quicksilver ones do appear for sale everynow and then.
Forget claims that any of cheaper ones will liberate 10 -> 15bhp and just enjoy the noise. The primary restriction in the exhaust system is the manifolds and the cats so a full system like the K-Tec one or a custom designed system may give some additional go.
All will look better, last longer and sound better than OEM. Personally I've got a Quicksilver on mine and it sounds very nice.
