oh and the fact the cars in dads name :S
Raped, fking hell and the rest, no offence they honestly paid that much for that golf, my mate picked one of them up with like 30k miles on the clock one owner FSH with tax and mot for £600, honestly why would they pay that much for that car, hell tell them I got a mk1 GTi they can have needs some work but theres for 2k laugh

Swap it for the MR2, 5 door mk3 golfs arent ever going to be cool lol
thats the thing, THEY didnt pay anything, i took the fking hit for it, it was my money i had as an 18th birthday gift.

I would say don't bother with the upgrades, save the money for the MR2

alloys, suspension and the like is going to cost you a lot, as well as the big increase
in your insurance premium for what a 1.6 shopping trolley?

Im not that insurance savy, but from experience of friends you will be putting your insurance up
atleast 20%, devaluing your car, and wasting cash.

GET THE MR2

Hang on your parents forced you (an adult) to spend your money on something of their choosing? I'd go with what a couple of others on here have said. Give up on trying to 'mod' the Golf. It's never going to amount to much. Stick with it for a year or two until you've got the money to buy something you like.

I know you're putting forward technically sound reasons for why you should 'sort the suspension' and yeah it could handle better as a result, but it will still be rubbish and will in no way represent a reasonable return on investment.

Thom,

The sensible option is to take the money and put it towards getting the MR2 in a years time. Run the Golf as it is, clean it up, get your NCB boosted and put money away from your earnings each week. I had a burgundy Fiesta Popular as my first car and no amount of alloy wheels and lowered springs would have made it look any better.
The phrase I'm looking for is "throwing good money after bad", ie there is nothing to be gained from spending more on the Golf now.

In the end though it is your choice. Just be happy with the choice you make. And don't stretch the tyres wink

Wow there's some stock of sanctimonious crap on this thread. Since when did PH become the Daily Wail motoring section?

All he's talking about is a set of wheels to up the feelgood factor a bit until he gets something he really wants. No-one wants to encourage a barry car I'm sure but a set of BBS-style rims in a sensible size is hardly an irreversible 'value destroying' mod and chosen carefully could look great. Ditto a mild lowering kit. IME there's no shortage of potential customers for a mildly tweaked Golf anyway so what's the problem.

Yes there are ultra-sensible options like save the money to bring forward the change date a few months, but that's the OP's call.

The insurance issue sounds dubious but we're assured it's legit. Here's hoping.

+1.

Tell the parents you don't intend to keep the car any longer than they force you to, and therefore, it is pointless to waste money on it.

Pretty simple really;

1. Clean your car and do some little things like maybe get a different set of rear lights s/h, maybe half red / half clear or some mildly smoked ones, should pick them up for £30/40.

Make sure you get some little details sorted like clear side repeaters so you get rid of all the orange crap. That should make it look bit cleaner.

2. Get a set of BBS RS 'style' wheels, Lenso do some nice ones but just 15's though and if needed get a set of spacers so they sit in the arches properly.

3. Get some budget Coilovers like the Hottuning ones off the Ebay (approx £150), they really arent that bad for the money, bit bouncy but ride quality ok - and tbh its not going to be a performance car is so handling doesn't matter that much.

Then lower it so it is sat on its arse, then it will look pretty cool.
5 door cars can still be cool, and base model ones always look good just sat really low and on a nice set of wheels.

Just make it nice and subtle with the bodywork and then low on some decent wheels.

Job done smile

(Oh and if you like it just do it, you really shouldn't base your decisions on what a bunch people on a forum say, do what you want to do, who give's a st whether you feel accepted by the PH massive or not!)

I had a mk4 fiesta as a first car. 'Barried' to the max it was.

I had recipts for a £500 set of coilovers and a set of wide 15'' alloys also £500.

Handling was superb but I felt it was a waste of money. Luckily I purchased it that way.

Morale of the story - dont waste your money.

Get both then!

At least that's what I'd say if my parents did the same but then again, they wouldn't ever buy me a car...

Already got clear/smoke side repeaters, clear front indicators and smoked rear lights. Wheels i want as then i have a vast variety of tires to chose from and as BBS supplied the wheels for the G60's and the VR6's i know that style suit a golf to the ground. I do like the euro look, but for my daily commute its a bit impracticle given i must go over maybe 5 speed bumps in 30 seconds of road. The wheels are a cert, the suspension is an idea.

Have a browse at www.rarerims.co.uk

Nice selection of alloys including lightweights.
They are really good replicas of (mostly) racing wheels.
