RE: On The Road In The Mitsubishi Evo FQ400

What is all of this Halfords nonsense? It was never used previously and has now become some arrogant and ignorrant slur. It looks like a race car and the parts have been developed that way. If you think it looks like its been through Halfords you have obviously never watched a race series nor understand anything about aerodynamics. (thats not a direct comment just a generalisation)
If I had 50K to spend it would be fairly hi up on my list. Its as fast as pretty much everything in its price range. Especially round the track, IMO that is what makes it worth the 50K asking price.

Thing is, it's £50k for what looks like just another Evo, which can be had much cheaper. What really matters is what that price difference accounts for in the real world, for instance, potential buyers aren't likely to use the car to its' desired potential without indulging in some trackdays.
You see hundreds of Evos at track days and they have a massive following, but they just fail to excite me much at all.
Probably for the best anyway, since I won't be able to afford one anytime soon!

I hope all those who say Evos don't excite them have a actually driven one?
They're not designed to look nice, be impressive to your mates/work colleagues or have a spine tingling engine note. They're designed to be incredibly quick point to point cars for even an average driver and they fulfill that objective extremely well.
To write one off without having actually driven one is to completely miss the(ir) point.

You'd have to MENTAL to buy this car when you can have the Beemer for as-near-as-makes-no-difference money.
Somehow I think if you wanted a quick saloon you'd be mental to pay £50k for a BMW that doesn't even have 4WD.MrKipling43 said:

I remember when the last 400 came out. That was a waste of time too. Still in a couple of years you will be able to pick one up for £20-£25k.
£30k has to be the ceiling for a souless jap box these days. They no longer have the appeal they did 10 years ago.

Horrible stereotyping I know, but every new Evo I see being driven is piloted by some fat, baseball capped middle aged pie specialist. Often with some form of fat, short fighting dog of some sort.I remember when the last 400 came out. That was a waste of time too. I suppose they're the only ones who can afford the insurance but not the Porsche.
Awaits the indignation...

Wel, unless you live in Appleby, Cumbria, I guess we've experienced different owners, eh?
Yes, I guess so.However your comment appeared to be designed to provoke a reaction. As an Evo owner myself I must say I did feel offended by the stereotyping, but I guess that was your intention.

If you could do me a diagram of how offended you are that would be great, though.

I would be more than happy to oblige only following recent events that have transpired, since the thread you're refering, I think that using broom handles would appear to be somewhat distasteful. mrmr96 said:

Somehow I think if you wanted a quick saloon you'd be mental to pay £50k for a BMW that doesn't even have 4WD.You can however compare the E92 M3 to the GT-r and the BMW has been shamed from a performance perspective.....but it's still an M3 and it's gonna be an amazing drive with 400+ bhp sticking the arse out round the corners.
It's not even close on the 0-60 time - the FQ-400 is 3.8 compared to the M3's 4.8?
Having spent a day kicking about in the pair of them, I can report that the FQ400 is not as quick as the M3.
Perhaps the Evo would be quicker to 60mph, but while we were 'pressing on', I was chasing in the M3 and repeatedly had to back off on the straights. And the FQ400 driver was flat to the boards.
Also, everything about the BMW is better: interior, engine, ride. It's a better car, pure and simple.

I wouldn't be surprised if 60-1XX on an open stretch of road the M3 is noticeably quicker, but that's not comparing apples with apples. The M3 is designed as an Autobahn cruiser whereas the Evo is designed to be a quick point to point/sprint car.Perhaps the Evo would be quicker to 60mph, but while we were 'pressing on', I was chasing in the M3 and repeatedly had to back off on the straights. As others have said, it's like top trumps, I would imagine an M3 would be embarassed on a sprint course by the FQ-400, but vice versa on the autobahn.
I agree though that I would never consider paying anything like £50K for an Evo, but then I wouldn't pay that for an M3 either.

Er, no. It's not an 'autobahn cruiser'.youngsyr said:

I doubt that. The M3 is a fantastic drivers' car.youngsyr said:

Sure, but at least with the M3 you feel like you're in a £50k car.The way I see it is this (and should explain why I was so disappointed by the FQ400):
The rule of thumb with Evos has always been that they would scare a car that costs twice as much. Ten-fifteen years ago, a £30k Evo would really put the sts up a £60k Porsche. My problem with the new FQ is that it can't even get near the performance of a car that's the same price, never mind the 911 Turbo, which is what it should be scaring. Just to be clear the FQ400 wouldn't see which way a 997 Turbo went, in any situation, on any road.
That's why I don't like it.
For the record, I do think it looks great and it does make a ridiculous noise. That said, it's not as ridiculous as the noise an M3 makes!

In my opinion a car with a 4.8 second 0-60 mph time simply cannot be a particularly quick point to point car and a car with a 3.8 second time and the history of the Evo marque behind it will in all likelihood be much quicker on a sprint course. After all, how many M3s do you see entered in sprint competitions, let alone winning them?
Yes, the Evo FQ-400 is massively overpriced and it hasn't pushed the marque on as far as the earlier versions (let's not forget the original FQ-400 was released 4 years ago), but that its performance which even the review at the top of this thread admits is still "one of the quickest over the UK's miles of B roads".
