That is hilarious. I love it. Just like the 355 this is a sideswipe at all super cars.

Imagine driving that through Italy! Brilliant. How sarcarstic could you be!
Mmmmm scratchchin

How about adding a few Voda-phony / McLaren decals and seeing if you make it to the other side alive?!

If I see a 355 I instantly assume it's a fake until proven otherwise. REALLY devalued that model Ferrari in my eyes, and probably knocked a few k off used values.

If the owner's lost money then so be it - nothing like as much as been wiped off used 355 prices by these hunks of crap.
How can you not tell the difference even from a distant? One is a long sleek looking slender beautifully crafte vehicle, the other is a Ferrari, sorry MR2 lol, anyone who cant tell the difference between a real 355 and the abortion that is the MR2 355 needs there eyes checked

As for 355s losing value over scrap replicas? I highly doubt it, if so Cobras would cost pittence to buy, I could even have a Carerra GT after that company made the Boxster abomination, after TR40 I could have an F40 cheap?

Some stty cobbled together replica wont affect the used price of a 355, worry when you can make MR2 replicas from 355s wink

Crushing the car is way harsh in my opinion - he should have been made to pull the Ferrari badges off in front of the cops, but not lose his car.

I hate these kits as an MR2 enthusiast - why would you do that to a car that looks nice anyway. Here is my Turbo - no kit - it doesn't need one.

I would park mine next to a fake Ferrari and laugh.

Worst bit of the fake Ferrari in this article is the 119bhp engine - the slowest engine put in the Mk2 MR2 - so pants they discontinued it after 1 year. At least my Turbo is not far off the 0-60 of a 355 at 5.5 seconds.

Just come back from Italy - the Italians are VERY passionate about Ferrari - bit of a national obsession........
Now that's a nice looking MR2 - and has performance to match.

Thing is, you always get idiots at traffic lights trying to mess around when you are in an exotic car, and if that car does only have the humble 119bhp engine, then a souped up Corsa would probably embarrass the a55 of it.

what is the point?

Serves them right for having a fake in the first place.

I mean, they're not cheap are they, those Ferrari replicas based on MR2s?

For that sort of money, you can actually buy a decent 996 Porsche 911 / M3 / M5 / Lotus / Jaguar / R34 Skyline, the list goes on

So why put up with a wanabe fake instead? You can tell by glancing at it that it's not the real deal, it just looks out of proportion.

I've never understood why people fork out so much for replicas. For AC Cobras (i.e. DAC cobra) or some of the old school classic cars, one can understand why, as they are pretty rare and expensive to find originals, but a 355 Ferrari, pointless.

I know my opinion might upset some readers, but that's just how I fell about it !
Really? last i looked GTR's were fetching huge money!
Sorry, I meant R33 Skyline!
No you were correct. R34 Skyline, who mentined GTR???

Thanks mate - I didn't realise you could pick up an R34 for so cheap!

Still a shame for the bloke though, god knows how much money he wasted on it.
"Wasted on it" the phrase "you can't polish a turd springs to mind, it's still an MR2!

Personally I'm not a big fan of these MR2 Ferraris, but I don't understand the irrational hatred to them that PHers show. Surely it should just be a case of each to his own.

Afterall no one has a go at all the AC Cobra replicas rubbling around or even all the Lotus 7 replicas out there, isn't a Caterham just a Lotus 7 replica, albeit done with the original plans, but a Westfield purposely looks a little bit different here and there for copyright reasons. No one has a go at the owners of them for driving fake Lotus 7s.

If the story is true we should feel sorry for the owner, his money and he can do what he likes, shame the Italians are overly sensitive about their most famous cars. I think we should embrace people doing things a little different to their cars, they are doing no harm and fair enough we may not like it but that's what is great about living in a country where we can do what we like to our cars.

Ultimately cars like the 355 replica are just one end of the same (admittedly broad) spectrum as things like Lynx C-Types.

I'd be the first to admit that the price of a Lynx is fully justified when you consider the amount of work that goes into building one; but regardless of how grand a euphemism you dream up to describe these cars ('recreations', 'evocations', etc) the MR2-kit and the Lynx are both designed to look like something they're not. The extra money you pay for a Lynx means it drives like something it's not too - but it is not and never will be a Jaguar.

The MR2-kit attempts to ape a 355 for as little money as possible, hence why it doesn't particularly resemble a real one, but at what point does the sneering stop? That's a genuine question by the way. Is a Westfield acceptable? What about one of the Cobra replicas? Maybe a GT40 clone? A 911 made to look like a 2.7 RS?

Edited by Risotto on Wednesday 28th October 12:14
Most sensible response so far.

So what if you don't like the 355 MR2's maybe at was some teenagers goal. loves Ferrari's find you can get a kit for an old 119bhp MR2 that he can insure when he turns 17, spends from 14 years old to 17 building it in the garage with dad and then finds all the supposed petrol heads want it crushed because its not real. rolleyes

Or should every incorrectly badged car or replica should be banned and binned?

LOL I suspect this story was merely posted so as to provoke outrage at dodgy replicas...

So here's another nasty one which everyone's probably seen!

http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://1....

Why waste all that money partially-disguising something, when you can stick to the thing it's based on and retain taste, integrity, etc!

Any decent replicas- Westfield/Daxes/GTD40 to name a few- yes, they're still true to the cause. But there does seem to be a certain amount of tasteless imitation that goes on...

rofl best one in this thread yet

@ article, I think it's a form of power-abuse, they are just a bit pissed as they were actually fooled at first, and then used the law to "punish" the owner who actually didn't do anything wrong.

I went to Italy, and there was a stand on a market that embroidered (sp?) logos on hats & t-shirts, als Fezza logos. Cops didn't look twice at those stands.

Also, what do they do when they see a Fiat (Coupé?) with Ferrari badges?
Like I said, this is a bit "power trip" imho...

I imagine the choice of donor car is dictated by dimensions. It's not that the MR2 is an ugly car and people are trying to improve the looks, it's simply that it's the most suitable (or perhaps the least unsuitable) car to start from if you happen to want to make a 355 replica.

I can't find a link, but there were some replica cars crushed in the past at the behest of the Italian authorities, I think they were a more elaborate attempt to make 60's Maserati and Ferrari replicas and pass them off as real though. Also agree that once you put fake badges on a car then it crosses the line from replica to fake. Rolls Royce successfully sued the owner of 'the beast' to get him to remove their grille and spirit of ecstasy from the front of his custom car.

Seriously shut up, someone deserves to have their car crushed because other people don't like them?

Christ I don't like lots of cars but you have to be a grade A knobend to say that they deserve to have it crushed...

I don't beleive it to be true anyway...or at least not how it is portrayed in the story.
Just my opinion mate - i stated that when i replied to the topic. I don't like many cars either, and i don;t say I want them to be crushed.

This one deserves it
I'd say more people would probably want your M5 crushed on the grounds that you claim to have driven at 140mph on a public road.

I personally don't see the point in crushing someones P&J for a whole bunch of reasons. First off it's not benifiting anyone. Atleast a fine would go to building schools or Silvio's court defence fund.

Secondly it's always unfair. Crushing a 911 is a much bigger punishment than say crushing a Nissan Bluebird.

It's a slippery slope. How soon before you get your car cube for speeding?
Not really mate - I can say what I want in posts - where is the evidence? How can they prove it was on a public road and / or it was 140 mph?

Case closed.

rofl That's hilarious!!! Looks like the roof comes off too, probably so that you can sit upright to see the road! I really hope whoever made that had money to burn, and didnt make it as a serious replica!
As for that T-nuc with the MR2. I'm glad it did get taken off the road. People with actual 355's would be horrified if that piece of Scensoredt pulled up next to them. It's like people who put M3 badges on a standard 3 series! or AMG/SL55 on standard Sl500's........ YES You know who you are! You're liars and cheats!!!

You said it was 140mph and they'll probably want you to prove you were off a public road as they'll claim it was likely it was on public ground. Fairly irrelivent but my point is this, if people start having there cars crushed for crap like this then where will it end...
