Honda Civic Type-R Mugen, im pretty sure it'll beat all the hatches mentioned around a track! Comes at a heavy price though - £38,599
According to this month's Car, it does a 1:39.48 around Rockingham - fractionally ahead of an Impreza 330S, FRS does a 1:40:9 (where does all that power go....) and a Golf GTI 1:42:85 with the 'rocco R slightly over a second ahead of the Golf. Edit: Mazda 3 does a 1:42. Scirocco R a 1:41:25..

Still just a fwd hatch though.... - Golf GTI and a Caterham for the same cash, much more fun and the Golf would be very little slower in the real world, with limited visibility and speed limits etc...

Having had a couple of Mk2 Sciroccos and a Corrado VR6 in the past it'd be the Scirocco R for me, although I do agree that it's a little oddly proportioned to look at. It does stand out on the road, though, I think the front end looks great, and the R will have proper go and handling.

Perhaps quite a few years down the line before I'd consider buying one, and then only as a daily driver. It's a shedload of money for what it is. Too many proper 2-seat RWD sportscars on my list of future desires at the moment.

I don't think I'd put my money into any of those TBH. Out of the pick though, it'd be the Mazda. Capable, subtle and different. I simply couldn't live with the image of the Focus RS or the Megane myself.

C30R surely, if they dont do, they should.

C30 T5-R Design! 0-60 in 6.2 and 150 mph! bit more of a cruiser though! (I'd have one)

for the prices of the cars listed a used 8p audi s3 would be my preferred choice.

I think you'll struggle to get one for that price.
