It might just work. I'm keen at least.

I started with an XR-311, adapted it to take Rough Rider halfshafts, wheels and tyres, and then acquired a complete Sand Scorcher in secondhand spare parts.

I made a short chassis for the Scorcher: as short as the torsion bars would allow, and with the battery strapped across the rear crash bar. Better wheelies than a Wild Willy.

All lost in a house move long ago.

still got one sitting in my attic somewhere with the Acoms controller.

Was something really magical about tamiya..Also loved the quarterly (?) gloss books with all of their gear on display.

Very tempted to get this or the rough rider.

I had the Holiday Buggy & my mate had the Baja. Baja so much much quicker and better built. Consequently, I did what any real 'Pistonheader' would do. Put the 540 black motor and 7.2v battery in mine. Messed about with the gearing a bit and whoa... stupidly quick but poor acceleration. It went so fast the tyres would expand to almost double size and half the thickness. As soon as you tried to turn a bit quick, it would barrel roll down the road. I broke the front lug off the chassis that holds the wheel on. R.I.P.
Grew up and did the same thing to a Chesil Speedster. Broke that too at LeMans 06. Left me in a coma. Doh!

That triggered a memory! I remember the feeling of infinite power when the little 380 motor was changed to a 540 hehe

Then onto a Rough Rider which I wasted lots of time sealing up before looking for puddles to drive through.

What was the 4WD RC10 called?

I loved my RC10, which was a replacement for the Frog which started the madness.

I remember the sheer joy of going from a 540 to a 22 turn double, all for under £12 and having to maintain the brushes with lighter fuel and cotton buds to keep it going as fast as it could.
You didn't ever get that bad that you took motors to bits after each run did you? (I know someone who did paperbag)

I was going to ask what the car was around 1987, when the CAT appeared on the scene (I think Yokomo but always thought it was a US four wheel drive model)

But I found this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masami_Hirosaka

I remember getting him to sign my programme at Romsey (1987) and then watched as he was given a CAT by Cecil and promptly won the event.

After he had won, he did a lap of honour controlling the car with his feet !

A guy in the UK has a Sand Scorcher 1:1 replica.

Very nice. I'd question the 50K euros though. Those baja kits aren't cheap but they aren't that expensive and a suitable knackered Beetle doesn't cost much. Likewise fairly basic fabrication to jack it up too.

Always wanted a Sand Scorcher as a kid and saved up all my money from a paper round to get one. Bought a BMX instead.

One of my dreams would be to do the Baja 1000!

Love the Tamiya re issue policy. Recently saw the Boomerang kit that I got for xmas as my first ever rc car in about 1988! I remember I used to spend my saturday afternoons post school sports in Mick Charles Models in Ewell, annoying the sales assistants! Eventually saved enough for a Kyosho Optima Mid Custom Special LWB...it was superbly fast and was belt driven 4wd, loved it. However Tamiyas were always the best all round model range and I never managed to own a Avante; the original which was a hugely complicated and over engineered car.

PLEASE TAMIYA RE-ISSUE THE AVANTE...PLEASE PLEASE..PLEASE

I always loved the Tamiya box art, just invoked so much. Separated them from toys.

The other thing I remember was the choice of whether to use separate batteries for the steering servos, or go with the lightweight racing option that pulled power from the main racing pack. Problem with that option was the car would go out of control as the battery neared its end. A few tears from a mate as his Supershot ploughed into concrete steps.

The anticipation of waiting for the battery to charge, car fast-chargers were great, constantly borrowing my parents car keys.

Still got my Blackfoot, somethings wrong with the gearbox, but no doubt solvable. Probably caused by modded motor putting out too much torque biggrin

The Adur Model Car Club down here in Shoreham have a fantastic new track.

I often stop to watch the racing when I'm walking the dog - wonder if they'd let us borrow it for a PH meet? smile

HEHE another old sandscorcher owner here, in fact I found the body shell yesterday !! and still have the remains of the original chassis somewhere.. with knackered front suspension..

I was just about to buy a new front end for it but put a deposit down for a tatung tp100 printer instead to connect to my sinclair QL !!! so didnt ever fix the SS..

I used to race it with the RC club at Penn nr Wolverhamption. Didnt race it with the SS body though, used a rough rider shell for that.

mmm hopped up motors, ranger wheels ( same width front and rear) ballraces instead of the usual bushes and charging the batteries in a plastic bag in a bucket of water to keep them cool..

I may have to buy one of these !!!

G

IIRC the holiday buggies were in the class below with the 380 motor, and used to suffer terminal chassis breakage on the one piece tub. best bit about the SS was everything was replaceable.. Just as well as i broke most bits..

I'm thinking of a PH RC meet now.

Imagine the sight of grown men trying to race aged RC cars hehe

Lets do it!
Err no don't. You're no longer a child and it won't feel the same as when you were.

Bought myself a Tamyia RC car about 2 years ago for a bit of fun with a mate who talked me into it. Building it was great fun and driving it was a bit of fun for about 5 minutes then it quickly became quite dull. It's the only time I've lied to my wife about were I'd been as I felt some what embarrased to tell her. Put it away never to be used again.

Been meaning to sell it ever since.
