Generally like but the details are cheap. Those faux vents and gashes look straight out of a cheap tuners catalog, not BMW M butch of old (think E46 CSL)
I thought that too. Maybe it's just the angle of the picture but it reminded me of some of the old Reiger bodykits, with the deep dish wheels pushed out slightly too far:

Looks awesome and I desperately want...but being a young professional (i.e. their target market), at that price, I'd probably have a second hand Z4M Coupe and save myself £10k+ because I don't need the seats, or if I did, just get an M3! Could have been so much better with not a lot of effort (bit more power and lighter) but they've held back so as not to step on the toes of the M3 (sounds familiar from Porsche and the Cayman...). Having said that, I hope enough people buy them new so that I can pick one up in a few years time hehe

I think it ghas the makings of a cracking car. Evo's pre-production review was quite favorable towards it.

It looks different to a 135i, thanks to those flared wheel arches. Interior look a bit bland.
Just hope the brakes (a BMW weeks spot) are up to the job of stopping the thing.

Price? I'd say it's not too bad. Cheeper than the RS3. Has a premium over a 370Z. Depending on the option list, I'd say it was a pretty good price.

Think if the reviews are all good, this car will hold it's value well.

The only down side is that i think the new 1 series is out next year, so it could look dated very shortly.

Too heavy, not powerful enough, wrong engine, too ugly. Crikey - it's as bad as a Lotus thread this.

FWIW, I rather like this, although whether it's an M-car I don't know. My old man recently sold his E92 M3 having entirely failed to fall in love with it, having previously had an E46 M3 which he adored. The problem wasn't pace, but more one of feel. I think 225bhp/ton is a nice balance for road use, but the most important thing is surely tactility. If you enjoy the feel, balance and control weighting then 95% of the battle is won. The E92 M3 appeared more capable on paper and yet never really seemed very comfortable in its own skin to me - too fast, too heavy and too inert. Left me completely cold. My folks also have a 335i Touring and the engine is awesome. If it sounds right and the throttle response is good then they might be onto a winner...

I can't wait until 3-4 years after the launch date, when I will be able to stretch to £20k ish for a used car.

I'm also looking forward to the first tuning company to offer a conversion to the normally aspirated M3 V8. Now THAT will be a great little car!!

I like the idea behind the car....but lets face it we all want something from the M Division a little more in the E46 M3 CSL mold....

once you have created masterpieces like this why would you let that all important M badge gon on something that just a tweaked 1 series.

and as for the price. it is just way too high especially in the current economic climate.
All manufactuers need to wake up to the ridiculously high prices they are charging these days.

I priced a decent looking Ford Fiesta Zetec for the wife the other day and it was over 17K.

VW Golf R - too expensive
BMW 1 M Coupe - Also too expensive

It isn't a true M-Car, as stated earlier in the thread - M135i would be ideal -> give it some marketing headroon for a M135CSi variant (EMS tweak for more PS).

I feel strangely drawn to this car and cannot stand the base 1-series scratchchin

Must admit this isn't really doing anything for me. Don't really like the shape, or the colour, though I expect it will look much better in back or white, however boring that may be.

For the price I'd much rather a second hand M3 smile

Headline: Noddy crashes his car through Halfords and all sorts of cr4p gets stuck to it!

In the looks department, that's a clear example of not being able to polish a turd.

I don't see there being much of a market for this car. At c.£40K, it's horribly over priced for a perfromance car of that size and as others have said doesn't have a bespoke M-powerplant. Basically, it's one step on from the 135, which lets be fair, very few people bought into. Lately, BMW seem to like inventing niches, then making cars to try and fill them.

For me, it's a fail. Instead of making the 1M-Noddy-Special, they should have concentrated on a proper M1 (ref 30yrs ago!!).

340bhp resulting in 227 bhp/ton = only one conclusion.

Way too heavy, as usual !!!
Not really though, is it? It's pretty similar power-to-weight as an E36 or E46 M3.
Exactly. The 1M is supposed to be smaller than the old 3 Series isn't it?
Not really progress then given that those models are 10/15 years old; the Z4M had a power to weight of 231 Bhp/tonne so a step backwards as far as power to weight is concerned; I guess I was just hoping for more really.....
Yeah, cos you'll really notice the difference.

I'd imagine the 1er coupe is about the same size as an E36, but it is certainly better equipped and much safer in an accident.

If you expect every M car to be some lightweight special then you're a bit daft.

340bhp is a joke.. Just a cynical attempt to cash in ..
Whilst I agree that it's a cynical attempt to cash in (as are all their cars, they're a company, that's their job), I don't think peak power output matters. To my mind, straight line speed has never really been the point in M-cars.
They had a chance to produce a really great small M power unit. And all they have done is fit the unit from the Z4.

It's a real disapointment - this car is a 135is not an M anything

Pretty good job really. Very expensive for a 1 series but looks great! I hate the 1 series too, so that's high praise from me!
