what does thinking overtakes are impossible without 200bhp make you?

overtaking in a low powered car is much more fun, timing your 'run up' to where you know there's a bit with good visibility then just sweeping past is much better than 'pull out, mash right foot to the floor'
Run up? I do hope you are joking, im all for banana shaped overtakes, but not a run up, in the hope that when you get around a bend, nothing is coming (is that what you mean?)
yes, but still with time to slow back down and abort if the overtake isn't on

what's wrong with that?

Oh dear, this thread exemplifies what has gone wrong with driving in the UK.
That the OP should be concerned about the car used and how it appears to others.
Why?, how has this come about?
We actually know though, don't we?

Why does everything need to get so arsey?

The guy has an issue with doing something so basic as overtaking. You don't think he has a problem?

Perhaps that helps to explain the problems we encounter whilst merely trying to drive.

I get where your coming from. If I ever overtake anybody in my 1.1 I always expect them to be thinking Im some maniac driving like an idiot. Whereas I could do exactly the same in a M3 and people would probs look at me with admiration.

There are two things that I am certain result in an even greater level of vitriol:

1) Multiple vehicle overtakes (irrespective of the technique you use); and
2) Overtaking part of a queue of vehicles (knowing you stand a good chance of passing more on the next straight).

I'm certain A roads would flow a lot better if overtaking again became "normal" and that other road users facilitated it by leaving sufficient space between themselves and the car in front. Very frustrating when you end up behind a slow moving train of cars, none of whose drivers seem keen to execute an overtake...

It seems there are a lot of people that can't overtake, I fully agree with the run up method because I had to do it in my small low powered cars. It was the only way, that and dropping to the lowest possible gear.

I have been in a car (an old Fiat Punto) with a scary female driver who was sat at 40mph behind a slow moving car on a 60mph road. It was clear on the other side so she decided to overtake, she pulled out and we were not accelerating very fast, I looked down and we were in 4th gear so I said "we'll get past a lot faster in a different gear" as a subtle hint. She changed to 5th and we almost went backwards. After we eventually got passed I asked why she changed to 5th and she said because that's the fastest gear! I explained that 3rd would have been best but she just looked shocked and said it would blow up the engine. I gave up and have never been in a car with her driving since.

Driving with my mum is a very similar experience, she has no objection to overtaking, but it must be done in a way that is kind to the ears. Leaving it in third at 4000 rpm results in the usual "you will be out of fuel soon" comment. biggrin

Every time I see one of these I cannot understand why they didnt just buy the 330d.
Because they could either afford a 330d SE or a 325d M-Sport.

Stick on a bodykit and some 21 inch rims, drop the suspension and get a loud exhaust so it sounds flatulant and then play N Dubz at full blast. You'll be fine then. The trouble is Ethel and Bert will think that 40mph is the maximum safe speed at which to drive and anyone who dares to drive faster is a maniac. Having worked in a cafe in a shop they're probably the same silly old bats who can't just wait in a queue to be served without tutting and sighing about the service being too slow. That's how I like to think of them if they start getting agitated about my driving being too fast in their opinion.
To be honest, you really shouldn't worry about what other people think. You can drive perfectly and encounter some idiot who has a problem with you and think you're in the wrong in every journey. You'd never sleep at night if you let them all get to you. Just put them behind you.

I think this with most cars though. Works with most cars, petrol or diesel.

What you dont know is that the buyer may have been originally happy with the 320d so could have already a step up to th 325d, (which was quite reasonable), however making another step up could take the biscuit, where do you stop.

I do get angry when I see 520d's though, big old car with the smallest BMW lump.

I overtook a couple of cars last week on the way back from Skeggy - NSL roads where the other cars were doing 35 on the long straights.

Nothing unusual in that, except that I had a 26ft caravan attached to the back of the car.
