But isn't there a risk that sooner or later the government will do what they do in the US? You can have whatever plate you want for £250 (say) and everyone can afford one.
Technically you sort of can already - you can request a plate from DVLA, and providing it is in the correct format and has never been issued they will release it to auction. The catch of course is that you then have to be the winning bidder.

My father won his plate from this method and I'm waiting on one to come up that I requested 24mths ago.

I didn't realise this until recently. There was a plate I'd wanted for years, when I saw it in one of last years auctions, I couldn't believe it. I like to go to them so I went along. Luckily I won it after a plate guy dropped out. If he hadn't have bid on it I'd have got it for a lot less, but I came in well under my limit so I was happy.

L1 NEN on some nondescript hatchback.

Wonder if the owners are in the laundry business :-)

It might have been Lenin, who couldn't secure the actual plate he wanted.

The 912 looks a cracking car. A 911 chassis, but with an engine that isn't trying to kill you on every corner.

Of course it's trying to kill you on every corner, it's a 911. It's just more subtle about it than some iterations.
