Technically you sort of can already - you can request a plate from DVLA, and providing it is in the correct format and has never been issued they will release it to auction. The catch of course is that you then have to be the winning bidder.My father won his plate from this method and I'm waiting on one to come up that I requested 24mths ago.

I didn't realise this until recently. There was a plate I'd wanted for years, when I saw it in one of last years auctions, I couldn't believe it. I like to go to them so I went along. Luckily I won it after a plate guy dropped out. If he hadn't have bid on it I'd have got it for a lot less, but I came in well under my limit so I was happy.My father won his plate from this method and I'm waiting on one to come up that I requested 24mths ago.
