Well my friends, I'm rather upset.
Narrow country lane, Hilux towing a trailer with an excavator on it was coming the other way, I stopped and was about to back up, but he tried to squeeze through anyway, and failed. He dragged his trailer along the full length of my car at walking pace.
Oh that is heartbreaking. Accidents happen and all that but, like you, I fear for your ability to find anyone who can paint that car properly. Commiserations.Narrow country lane, Hilux towing a trailer with an excavator on it was coming the other way, I stopped and was about to back up, but he tried to squeeze through anyway, and failed. As for SpeckledJim, as suggested, he has been sent for PH re-education after posting something no doubt eminently sensible which, as we all know, is verboten these days. He assures us he will be back.
Pretty close to the mark, BM.

Oh no! That is terrible. And having to watch it happen in real time must have made you wince. Some people!Narrow country lane, Hilux towing a trailer with an excavator on it was coming the other way, I stopped and was about to back up, but he tried to squeeze through anyway, and failed. True though.
A mere enquiry over making a claim for a non-faulter resulted in a stamp on the database. I now have to declare I was involved in a non fault accident on each of the seven vehicles, otherwise they declare it for me and bounce the policy back (at my cost of course). All premiums have gone up significantly.
Twunts.

Understandably so. Good luck getting it sorted to a standard worthy of that car. Fingers crossed.LetsTryAgain said:

Details exchanged, claim underway. Thanks for the commiserations.
And the best thing is, despite not being your fault, your insurance will still go up. Not looking forward to renewal. I had a guy reverse into the front of the E63 before Christmas. Eventually got sorted through his insurance (they did a good job to be fair, however not looking forward to the rise in premium).

Best of luck sorting it, stick to your guns if the paint doesn't come back perfect - no reason they should try and weasel you down to a substandard repair.

I pity the paint shop that gets that job.
This is my biggest concern. My insurers opening gambit was a smart repairer, which I rejected. I explained the nature of the vehicle and the paint, but they've put me onto a middling repairer with middling reviews, which would be fine were it any 14 year old Toyota. I'm going to get a quote from Chartwells Derby and steer them in that direction. On the one occasion I succumbed to the insurer’s patter about their approved repairer, when my daughter’s Golf tangled with an old boy’s Jag, it took 3 months back and forth to cure leaks, missing parts and general bodging. I gave up and dealt with the leaking light, improperly fitted arch liner and leaking grommets myself. The paint quality was the best part, but I’d stick out for a repairer of your choice.
We have had three cars rear ended in the past 6 years and premiums have never gone up. Can’t say the same for the effect of the 50/50 settlement on my then 20 year old daughter’s premium!

Quoting this one rather than being repeatedly forced to look at the picture. If you can bring yourself to travel to this side of the Pennines, I can recommend Castleton motor bodies, they did the work on SL1, and when the 7 got keyed too. In both cases, 2 & 3 years on, you still can’t see it visually. Ask for Geoff (or Shaun).
If you decided to use them, you’re welcome to borrow the 7 (or the SL) to use while they’re doing it - I’m only around the corner from them.

A recommendation and some advice would be helpful. My guess it £200 - £300 for a decent DIY one?
I had a Autel system a few years ago as an all purpose scanner and I was pleasantly surprised by the compatibility and functions it offered for its relatively low price (at in the grand scheme of diagnostic systems!). No third party scanner is going to be absolutely everything, but for basic functions it was a great tool.Edited by Emeye on Friday 2nd April 13:50
This looks like the modern version to what I had

A good battery and a scanner are requirements in our quest for barging on a budget and not having a coronary at the sight of an engine management light.
I was thinking this isn't really thread fodder, but we had two days of talking sunroofs, then two more about the E36, so what the heck. I much preferred these when they were £2k, but the photos are just so nice, I thought they were worth a share.

Good luck with getting a decent standard of repair, as far as I know the insurer can't force you to use someone you don't want to.

What happened to SJ, anyway?
He was here and then, not.One infers from the niggardliness of r129sl's update that there is a degree of discretion involved; it's on a need to know basis and we... (blankety blank blank blank).
Intriguingly, we also know that S and J are also the initials of a significant other... possibly a girl with tulips in a basket? Sara Jane? Seductress Juniper?
Great to hear that SJ is merely on gardening leave. I look forward to his triumphant return.

Another example of how organisations get to getter and have a brainstorming session to see how they can stitch up for a few dollars more without being done by the Trades Description Act/jail.
Blatant theft.
21st Century Man;- true commiserations, and a couple of points:
1) Thankfully the trailer towing Hilux apparently wasn't piloted by one of the usual uninsured caravan dwelling owners.
2) You are entitled to be put back in your pre accident situation by the third party, so as well as demanding a perfect, undetectable repair, also sue for indemnity against increased future costs, such as insurance premiums.

21st Century Man, because of the rarity/possible historic value of your car, does it reduce the risk of it being written off by insurers?
Also, there is a chap down on Perkins Industrial Estate who's forte is custom paint jobs. I have used him on number of occasions with good results. He repaired my Jasperblau C class when the wind blew my motorbike over on to it. Bike repair:Bent handlebars-£50. Car repairs: Dented/scratched down to metal wing, nerfed alloy, cracked headlight, cracked bumper-£690 Turns out that particular colour was a purplish metallic with a blue top coat.(I have no idea of the correct terminology). The repair was imperceptible.
In other news, all these pictures of SLs have really fired up the old brain cells. For those that actually run an R230 SL, how problematic is the roof and how susceptible to iron oxidisation are they? Do they have the SBC system as per the E-class of that era?
