errrr, some people have to get out?
Are you really incapable of seeing that other people may live in different circumstances to you?
Nope, im aware of other peoples existance. Are you really incapable of seeing that other people may live in different circumstances to you?
However if i did shift-work, or my job was such that i couldn't work remotely, or other people were particularly dependent on me.
And i lived in a region where i knew the local roads where bad or often tricky in the winter, id take it upon myself to get a capable 4 wheel drive vehilce not jump on here saying how life-changing winter tyres are.

whoops! Is that a 4wd? Not me btw, dailymail pic
Just goes to show that even if you have a 4x4 or have winter tyres fitted, if you don't drive to the conditions you'll end up in a ditch.j4ckos mate said:

If you have winter tyres you don't necessarily need 4 wheel drive to get going in snow. However if i did shift-work, or my job was such that i couldn't work remotely, or other people were particularly dependent on me.

And if you have need four wheel drive to get going in snow, you will need winter tyres to stop and go around corners in any meaningful sense.
I can't afford to run a 4wd, but luckily I don't need to, thanks to spending a mere £230 on the right tyres for my little hatchback.

Better traction with 4wd does not equal better grip for stopping and cornering.
Aaaaaaannnnddd here we go yet again...

A 4x4 will get you going, but you've still got to steer and stop and with no advantage over a regular vehicle, in the case of a big SUV type 4x4, you're even worse off in that respect, despite the 4WD, which other dynamics negate. I would rather be in a small FWD hatch or something.

I really, really don't want to read all 311 pages.......but...
I've just had 4 x Goodyear Ultra grip 2 225x40x18 tyres fitted to my car - Volvo V50 2.0d. Had a quick look online at possible reviews, but not many good sites mention them!
£650.00 fitted incl nitrogen, balance etc...
Anyone know anything about them? By the way, before I get flamed, they were free to me through our work account...
Cheers.

I think this picture gives you an idea of how good they are. Mine are the same size as yours and they performed well earlier gaining entry to the '4 x 4 only' car park at the top of Lickey Hill. Watched at least 5 cars on summers sliding back down the hill whereas the vRS just cruised up no problem. Guy in a Land Rover said he didn't realise the Octy vRS was four wheeled drive!?! Chaps, feedback on the Continental Winter Contact TS830, get good reviews in Auto express anything else I should know?
Put a set on early December and have been excellent so far. Confidence inspiring in the wet and on icy roads and very good traction in the snow, and also surprisingly quiet. They can feel a bit squidgy when you first try them, but if you drive to the conditions that soon disappears. Overall handling and steering feel is very good.
They don't like potholes, so be careful.Replacements are hard to get hold of now, only on back order I think. Took me 4 days to get one, so I am ordering a spare just in case I find another pothole.
Highly recommended. Might be worth reading the test in EVO mag if you haven't already.

My faithful steed needs new front tyres, and when I asked about them the PH winter tyre beards said Kleber Quadraxers would do. Can I just replace the front 2 or will I die in a ball of flames unless a 4 are the same?
They'll certainly help but you end up in the risky situation where (obviously) you have less grip on the back end - when cornering for example. So whilst you may be able to get the car dragging itself out of situations where it might struggle, if you're taking a corner on a slushy / icy patch you could end up with the back end breaking away from you as the grip levels are mismatched. I'm not sure I'd want to take that risk personally. Chicane-UK said:
