Standard thread response.

Off topic post myself but Mrs LTA is now in the hospital.
She had a fairly terrible night from 21:30 and didn't really get any sleep at all.
I can't join her due to the general populations appalling capitulation last March - June, but I'll either be picking her up later today to 'progress' at home or I'll be joining her.
Slightly thread end - the S211 will be doing 'first drive home' duties, touch wood.

Edited by LetsTryAgain on Wednesday 7th April 09:21
I wish Mrs LTA all the best
Echo that. Fingers crossed. Keep us updated LTA.
Best wishes LTA.
All the best. My first born was collected in a 380SEC smile

Best wishes for all LTA - for reference Miss McGee was transported safely and sleepily home in a Scooby WRX - that boxer engine proved to be a ninja at getting kids to sleep.

2 hours left on the auction and this old girl has only reached £9.5 bags of your sand. I know it's well over the "thread plus sensible margin" but it's featured on these pages before and it looks an absolute minter!

£12,250 in the end!

I tackled the rear window seal on mine and it has ensured it’s completely watertight. It’s a design flaw on every R230 and remained on the R231. Expect to have to sort it but if done right that should be a one time job. I wrote a detailed thread with pictures on the popular MB fora.
I also did that myself and it wasn't a bad job at all. Also remember amusingly having an argument with someone on here who insisted it was impossible to fix yourself and and only new seals from MB could fix it (which everyone except him knew they don't.)

Good point on the panoramic roof and AMG wheels, mine had both and was all the better for it.
Some cracking comments chaps.... you're really selling them (do to speak).

There is an update for lexus gs300 bought for my friend.
The battery and AC amplifier (control unit) gave up. Used AA parts and garage cover policy but had to pay extra £350.

Another friend needs a car below £1500. Petrol, below 1500cc, manual. Should be cheap to maintain. Thank you.

Rather than carrying out research online from various buying guides I'm just going to ask a simple question for you guys to answer.......Will a W140 S600 financially ruin me? I need one in my life and there a couple on Autotrader right now.

Am I asking for trouble?

If you can find one for the budget - Mk.1 Toyota Yaris, K11 Micra (watch for rust) or for something more modern Toyota Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 108 imho.

If you can go another 100cc take look at a Fiat Sedici. Cracking little Suzukis.

Check for:

Rust
All electrics work
Soft close works
HRW delamination
Broken springs

The oily bits aren't too bad

Edit: and sunshine roof drains. If the A pillars are damp it's likely rusted the cassette

Didn't realise the Jazz had got so cheap, good cars.

This is possibly the worst place to ask that question as we’ll all tell you to buy one blind, get a one-way ticket & show us the results at the petrol station. Tis the thread way. smile

It’ll all depend on how much you think is excessive spend, and how hands-on you’re prepared to be. Depending on your perfectionist level, if you want to bring one back to showroom, you could sink £10k easily, get someone else to do the work, and maybe double that.

Put it this way, I am well over £1/mile in running costs (excluding purchase price) for the 7-series, sometimes you get single digit mpg in traffic. That hurts, no matter how wealthy you may be.

All that said, I’d have one, they’re fantastic cars. (Do it!)

useful stuff:
Hereward has a readers ride thread on his SL600, lots of engine info there (and hydraulics).

It'd be great if Hereward were to update his thread.

With regards to the W140 S600, that's a teeth sucker for most sane people. For us, the enjoyment is the masochistic pleasure from running something that defies reason*, which is why you're looking at it.

  • with the exception of anyone that opts for a Lexus.

Yes to all of that.

I have had a W140 500 and a C140 600, neither cost me a great deal to run beyond the usual. In summary you need to buy one. A W140 600 remains on my wish-list, I am only put off by the fact I remember when a good one was £5k.....
