I’m a bit surprised somewhere as potenially dangerous as a petrol station would be completely unmanned.

You obviously haven’t been to France lately. Unmanned petrol stations as common as bird doo doo. Really easy to use too…..we need more over here too!

This may have been answered before, but why isn't petrol the same price across the country? Are potatoes different prices at different Tescos? Would Asda sell bread at 75p in Devon and 96p in Norfolk?

Both of the Asda filling stations near me are completely unmanned. They removed the kiosks several years ago. Apparently "remotely monitored using CCTV"

And I suspect also helps with theft as you have to insert your payment card before it dispenses fuel I think?

It has been answered before but I am happy to repeat myself.

Q. Why do they charge such different prices?
A. Because they can.

Petrol retailers will charge whatever the local market will stand. It has always been thus and the answer has always been the same: vote with your wallet and buy it somewhere else. If people don't pay the price they are asking then they won't be charging it for very long.

My local Tesco is down to £1.429 a litre now, so the Momentum I need is "just" £1.499 a litre.

Last month Momentum was £1.579 a litre!

But like most of us here I'm addicted so I'll pay whatever it costs, and they know that sadly.

That extra for the super isn’t too bad. The Shell V Power diesel is 16p more a litre, which adds up with a big tank so I’ve given up.

Same reason as most other things, unit costs are the same but overheads are different by location - if you can why would you not pass that through to the customer?

If that's The Meadows it was down another 1p for 99 when i filled up on Friday.

Quite a nice surprise tbh as i haven't had to fill either of my cars up for about 2 months (one of them was in for work and the other had just been doing local runs). The last time i did it was about £1.60 something for 99.

Yes it was The Meadows. I was just glad I had let my 330i get quite low before I brimmed it last week!

My local Costco is easily accessible and has a queue pretty much from the minute it opens. There's surely money to be made by charging the same as Costco in the right place? People want the cheapest fuel, offer it and they will come?
I’ve been using Costco Reading for a few months, short detour from M4 on my occasional trip to the office!

Always get there around 0730, not had to wait once!

Diesel, £1.53.9 today
I go to the Costco in Oldham on the way to work at about 7:30, it’s been quiet at that time for a while but it’s started getting busy again, I might have to wait a couple of minutes for a pump. I pass on the way home and the cars are queueing around the car park. I couldn’t be arsed with that!
I go to Costco Leeds and it's a small diversion from when I'm in the office and never had to wait (unlike at the petrol station in my village which reguarly backs up and blocks the main road.... but anyway).

However, I was told by a colleague that travels in from near Oldham that it is is reguarly 5p/10p cheaper than the Leeds one which might explain the queues.

It’s currently 1p cheaper, but Greater Manchester (if that’s the right term) seems to have the cheapest petrol in the uk. My in laws live in Bolton and even the shell garage is normally cheaper than Leeds Costco.

Not sure how it is in the UK, but in the US gas prices seem about right.

I filled up for $3.17 per US gallon at the weekend. Under $3 feels cheap, and when it's around $4 it feels expensive.

Then again, fuel isn't taxed here the way it is in the UK. Interesting that in 10 years of Tory rule no one has come out for slashing fuel duty!

I don't think the disparity is as bad as it once was? Your prices must be going up as ours have always been fairly high. You're paying about 60% of what we pay but I seem to remember your cost was once around 25% of ours. Maybe I have it all wrong, got no evidence for this historic comparisons.

The devaluation of the pound has made it look more expensive when you convert it, in 2014 it was 1.71 vs 1.27 today, no doubt it will have increased regardless as ours have though.
