Compare it to any Mercedes SL. None of these are genuine 4-seaters in any kind of real-world way.
I once carried 3 people in my SL. The chap who went in the back still remembers the experience. In short you need to have no legs at all.
They were only ever a token nod to the US taxation system that unduly penalised two-seat vehicles at the time. It's why 8 Series, DB7, XK8 etc feature "rear seats", 911s too.
I had three girls—grown women—in the back of my 129 way back in a different lifetime. These days it's just the kids. Interestingly, rear seats weren't fitted to US model 129s.

Thread demands details. And, ideally, pictures. Asking for someone else, obvs.

When working for a manufacturer who built a car like those above we talked a lot about ‘permission to buy’. The idea that a lot of the male customers of the car were nervous that the car should not feel too frivolous. Also that whilst they knew the car would almost never carry more than two people, the Domestic Keepers of All Information would not sanction a six-figure purchase on a two seater pure toy, especially when there were kids at home.

That the pure ‘want one’ factor had to be combined with some ‘feature man maths’ that half-way justified it as sensible after all.

I've just heard from Derin: I won't steal his thunder but watch this space for details of an interesting purchase.

I never did hear back from Strela, though.

It must be a chateau with a whole set of barns? Right? And he’s going to buy all the cars from his site back and display them there, at a museum/restaurant/hotel thing?

A shame, his threads were usually a great read. Thanks for the update.

For a rust killer I've used Hammerite Kurust before - I remember the Bilt Hamber range of items are well reviewed, but a different class of expense really.
Not a fan of Kurust here, the rust came back within weeks.

You know that cavity in the lhs of the boot? Quite useful IMO... (no pics of course as I’m abroad, but I can rectify that at the weekend).

I made sure to buy a head unit that has separate line outs (actually has F, R & Sub, not using the R), so that the sub can be easily switched on/off at the head unit, if needs be, so that the boot space may be reclaimed. (You can unplug the power cables / rca connection in 10 secs).

I’ve used bits of pipe lagging to secure the box into the gap for now, it’s good enough to isolate the box from the body, while providing positive location. I will sort something a little less Heath Robinson appearance-wise when the weather improves.

To be honest, the 12” sub I went for is a little excessive. The 6.5” door units are pretty good (the crossover is excellent and really works well), but an open door mount will never achieve as good a ‘thump’ as a proper enclosure. I’ve had to throttle it slighly compared to the front to get a balanced sound, doing it again I’d probably pick a 10”.

The overall sound is good enough for me, and while it doesn’t have all the logic7 clarity of the BM’s, it’s crisp enough, and sufficiently powerful to drown out the majority of the McDonalds crowd too.

If you’re planning on something for the CL, it might be worth looking what sort of clearance you’ve got under the seats - this is where BMW seat their sub’s, so there’s lots of ‘designed’ enclosures about - just need to mount it & feed it the signal - pretty much stealth install, if that’s what you’re after - obviously not really an option in the SL.

Looks like a good'un at a great price.
They XYZ car always 'needs a regas'...

Nice motor nonetheless
Lovely thing.
Not all V8 E39s have the water cooled alternator? So which ones have water cooled alternators and which ones don't? Is there a model year split or something?

The refurbishment of the steering wheel on that one could explain why one of the Switchtronic buttons on the wheel isn't working?

Great that Derin's back on-stream. Strela's a loss, but he has properly dropped-off.

I like the suggestion that Derin amasses a massive collection of special cars and then grants special access to his special collection to a special group of particularly close internet special friends who are all a bit special with specialist interests. We could probably have a T-shirt printed.

Good threading gents. Much jealousy here for the G wagen. I've long hankered after one, preferably with plaid cloth.

Thank you.. In fact I already have a set-up in the CL fitted by people who do it for a living. No way am I going near trim and electrics..

Sub had to go behind the passenger seat as they said the fuel tank in the middle made a boot sub pointless. It has a quick release plug on the rare occasion I have to make room in the back.

Anyway I digress, I was curious about the 129, so it sounds as no fuel tank bulkhead to be factored in. Which is good.
