It's not even the 1.8t! £4.5k for the most mundane Golf GTI ever made.

Very nice, maybe the best around, but £40k for a Mk1 Golf GTI? https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1241533.

Probably one day that will be the going rate, but not yet..
They’re at about 27k for the best at the moment

Mk3 Golf Gti 2.0 8v. 133k on the clock. Been on sorn and neglected for 8 years. Looks pretty rough. Yours for £5000. laugh

Lucky if it's worth £500

Down to £2,000 now. Still massively overpriced, obviously.

I might just about shell 2K out for a mint 16-valver, but the only 8v that are worth anything (unless they're stupidly low mileage) are the special editions.

Here's another one - £4495.

"THESE MK3 3 3 DOOR GTI's ARE STARTING TO CATCH UP PRICE WISE WITH THE MK1 AND MK2's SO NOW IS THE TIME TO GRAB ONE".

No. Really they aren't.

That works.

I've been in that showroom a few times. The cars were nowhere near the standard they should have been.

Low miles at 22k and what looks like a decent spec but £22,500 for a 2006 Audi S8 is insane. I've seen a few of these ads from private sellers where the car is just absurdly overpriced; AT even give you a recommended price so it's not as if people are completely unaware!

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202...

For comparison here's a 2013 model with 51k on the clock for the same price and from a respected dealer

Both over priced.
The 2006 model does have a quite significant difference in mileage though.
Different subject but who in their right mind would want either? Both years out of warranty and potentially both big money pits..

I don't really see why ''one day'' it would be worth that... surely 80's and 90's hot hatches are now at their peak desirability in terms of the generation who these cars mean anything to and can afford to pay the already insane bubble prices, I don't think in 10 or 20 years times there'll be millennials lusting after mk1 golfs, 205's etc

I'd be absolutley and totally stunned to the point that my heart might stop if the mileage on that 22k fourteen year old S8 is genuine. At the very least it will have gone out on one of those dirt cheap leases with a 5k mileage allowance that they had to get metal moving, and had a massive haircut before each trip to the dealer. Which might as well be a standard fit option on the cheap but stupidly low mileage lease deals that are everywhere.

Even if the mileage is to be believed it has barely turned a wheel since 2013, and if there is one thing complicated old cars don't like it's not being used. In the case of one of Piech's overcomplicated VAG follies like this then another thing they don't like is working properly without at least £5k of bills a year.

I'm sure that it's absolutely spectacular when it's working, but if you can afford to run one of these properly then you can afford to buy/lease/PCP a newer one that won't leave you at the side of the motorway or inconveniently explode when you need to get somewhere.

How come that Mk 1 Mini Cooper Ss are worth more than that then, having accelerated sharply in value over recent years? As I have said before, classic cars that are regarded as icons do not follow the same rules as the end of the market that is driven by nostalgia, for reasons that I am not going to repeat yet again. The Mk1 GTI is a nailed on icon that speculators will invest in, to sit unused in air conditioned storage.

As you rightly say... recent years is the key.

The ZIRP/QE fuelled asset price bubble we've seen in recent years has inflated these iconic cars beyond all previous prices thanks to the speculators, so I suppose the question is will the economic conditions we've seen in recent years continue for several more decades to support the current ongoing speculative bubble.

I would certainly accept that. A lot of the speculation in art, property & to a much lesser extent iconic cars, has been driven by the poor performance of traditional investments....
