Isn't it a fantastic car!
Yep, a good natter had, and a brief waft around in a V12 has made the want very strong!

Nice to meet you chaps.

Fellow LS400 owners, what sort of range can I expect from my MK3 on a long run? I know a V8 barge with a 4 speed box means it won’t be great but trying to get a indicative figure before the roadtrip
Per tank or before it detonates and necessitates a dubious taxi home?
If you refresh all it's juices and renew all it's filters, it'll be an awesome reliable comfortable car to road trip in.

I think the tank is about 80L. The last time I accurately recorded the fuel consumption, it was 31mpg on a 250 mile run, with a bunch of heavy stuff in the boot. It was from the Midlands to South Devon, so plenty of hills on the A38.

With a few mates, I reckon 25mpg is a safe bet. And 70 safely-useable litres in the tank.

Quick maffs suggests: 70L / 4.54G = 15.41 (safely useable) gallons in the tank. 25mpg * 15.41G = 385 mile range.

If you drive around towns, with a heavy foot, and a car full of passengers and gear... Expect low teens / single digit MPG....

The engine and 4 speed box are simple and tough though. I wouldn't be worried about it anyway!
Thanks for the indepth and comprehensive answer!

There are 2 of us with 2 small suitcases for a good chunk of the trip. Been running around in the car since it’s major service and it’s been silky smooth and sweet so far.

I guess the real indicator of range will be the first part of the trip which is Leeds to Folkestone next Thursday. That’ll be the first real run so a full fill up before we go and another full up before boarding the eurotunnel train will give me a good indication.

Sidenote - need to start a thread on the trip but can’t decide what section. General Gassing, Holidays & Travel or Readers Rides. What’s best?

Now now... teacher

I won’t hear a bad word against my new bestie! laugh

To tell a story...

Ian & I are stood talking barges, when a guy pulls up next to us. He asks if we’ve seen a silver Impreza around, as he’s running late and he should have been meeting him here. No, we reply. OK he says, well the :: driving it is my mrs’ new boyfriend and he’s got my kids with him. You don’t know him, do you?

Err. no.

Well, he’s got my kids, and I don’t know his name, or where he lives, as she won’t tell me.

Err OK, no, we definitely don’t know him.

Right, well see, I’m running late, had to do 90 to get here, so I’m going to let the car cool down for a while. You should come and look at this though, car’s got rust coming through on the front wings - look at it.

he opens the bonnet (it’s an old v40)

See, they just bolt on - garage only offered me £150 for it, the robbing bds, the wheels are worth £500 if I just put new tyres on it.
Ian & I look at each other, wondering if we’ve found some new species of bargain-basement shed advocate, who’s just happened to turn up randomly at the same spot. The guy goes round to the back of his car, gets out a copy of some Ford magazine featuring the Es. Cos.

Look at that - that’s a proper car, you want one of them. I always wanted one. Anyway, you sure you haven’t seen an impreza?

Pretty sure...

Oh right, anyway, I’ve been working all night, I’m the oldest one on the shift, they’re all in their 20’s and 30’s and on their phones, I can’t be doing with that. fking young people, no social skills. Anyway, I’m meant to be going with this guy to a garage, see if I can get some front wings for the car, ‘cause they’re rusty, see.

Krikkit turns up

Hi mate, you’ve not seen a silver impreza have you?

Erm no...

Well, .... anyway, how old are you?I’m 50. Left school back in ‘82, got on a 7-year apprenticeship but the recession in ‘91 made me redundant. But, I’ve been working all night, <to Krikkit> you’re too young to remember, have you got a phone?

Yes?

Can you call this number & when she answers, ask where he is, so I can get the kids?

Krikkit dials number. It’s gone to voicemail.

Ah, OK right. You want a bottle of water?

Er... no thanks.

No, no, it’s ok, I got them on the way here, cost me a pound.

Ian & I are given bottles of water, the guy’s not taking no for an answer - Krikkit doesn’t get one as he’s too young?- He was offered a snickers later though - there’s a joke there I’m sure!

Can I have a sit in your car?

.......And on and on. At one stage he was Inquiring after Ian’s T-shirt, did we like football or rugby? He even had a squash racquet & tennis racquet he was waving about - got them for the kids, see?
Now, I’m a polite soul, but after 20 minutes he was beginning to get on my wick, a bit However, finally, off he popped, much to our general amusement!

So yes, the 2018 March Barge meet in Humberside was special, with a capital WTF.

It was otherwise a pleasant get together, a couple of hours of barge-related chat & then a nice cruise home.

(Ian’s Bike is out of shot, & I took the picture so remain partially anonymous).

If it wasn’t for Kevin, this would have been the ‘Doom Blue’ barge meet - but Kevin takes the prize. Next time, can we have something with a pay car-park, please? smile

Rob.

No worries, friend.

I'd shoot for a 400 mile range. Assuming you're not two 6'10" sumo wrestlers carrying a small suitcases full lead bricks... hehe

Great cars. Properly jealous of your trip. Take (lots) of photos, and post up a link in here when you've set up a thread.

Some lovely and interesting barges from Techno Classica. What about this S126? I like the way it's retained the original rear window

Been browsing AT for S211 E320 Cdi either this engine or 280, seem to be plenty of Sports around in either a 08 or 09 plate but not many Aventgardes. Is this correct, a few late E220 avantgardes about but not sure I want a Sport.

Obviously some of the 07 reg cars are just getting into thread budget.
I found the same problem looking for an S211 320Cdi a few years ago. They are rare compared to 280 sports that all seem to come with very non thread 19inch wheels. There must have been a deal on the sports or corporate wanted to boost numbers via lease deals with the new model looming.

I held out though and love the car.

It’s avantgarde and plenty firm enough. The 320 comes with an 80L tank which makes for an epic long distance car of that size. The stereo is old hat, but can be upgraded if that’s your thing. I don’t want to pay for nav either - Tom Tom Live sorts that.

Of course I’d the option then of a newer 320 petrol then for the same money...doh!

Bear in mind turning a 280 into a 320-a-like is merely a remap away.

Not quite a barge, however as this thread has the best knowledge on the forum.

My relative is looking for a new (old) car. The current focus saloon is on its way out and trying to MOT it would be a waste of £50 so something needs to be found in the next couple of months.

Looking around I found an 04 RAV4, 2L petrol just under £2k, it was only a couple of miles away but unfortunately sold before we could get there to look at it.

Recently retired, he will spend a fair bit of his time doing local driving 1-20 miles with 200mile motorway trips a number of times a year up to Scotland.

With a set of cross climate type tyres and 4 wheel drive, i'd imagine that would be able to cope with all but the worst snow. Plenty of room for his dog in the back and enough space if he is giving someone else a lift.

It appears it is fairly cheap for general consumables, I checked ECP and with the latest discount code air, oil and cabin filters, oil, 4 spark plugs, wipers all round, thermostat and disks and pads for all 4 corners was under £200. With the right discount, probably could do a £20 oil change.

Does anyone have any experience of running these? Are they reliable in your experience?

Only interested in the petrol version, the diesel sounds like it has alot of problems and isn't suitable for the regular short journeys the car will make and the petrol uses a timing chain.

Looking at 5 door XT? models as the vehicle needs to be Euro 4 for soon to be introduced LEZ purposes.
Between me and my family we've run about 4 late 90s - mid 00s Toyotas but never a Rav 4. All have been very, very reliable. All they've ever needed is consumables.

My neighbour has a 2006 Rav 4 diesel on about 150k miles and it soldiers on, he doesn't look after it.

Think you'd be just fine recommending one.

Sorry I didn't make the barge meet.

I was going to bring my 745, but a coolant leak meant I resorted to my old silver impreza.

I'd said to my new missus that I'd take her and her kids too, but I got a puncture and the lock nut was at home.

Shame.

No long range tank on the 280, though.

Did a Subaru ever turn up?
