Is there ever a VALID reason to be on the phone, hand held or hands free, when you are driving?

They are both, as has been proved, as dangerous as each other.

Say NO to remote calls.: shout

Yes. TRRL I believe, (if not then some other road research organisation), study.

Both as bad as each other. It is the remoteness of the call which is the critcal negative aspect.

The tennis is only for spelling and grammar. But it's game set and match against phones while driving.

If it's a complex subject matter, I know the calls I get are distracting so now don't take them on my hands free system.

So, sat nav, radio, mmi type systems, misbehaving kids, talking to the wife, dealing with drivers unable to keep close to the posted speed limit & the senile are not an issue then?

What a crock of st.

Rear fog lights in a queue of traffic. rolleyes
Given that I'm sat behind you and we are stationary, or at best crawling at 10mph, do you really think I'm not going to see you because of the fog that was wisping over the moors 5 miles back? Moron retard. smash
On a similar theme tonight on the M80, there was a bit of light wispy mist. You could clearly see the normal tail lights of the cars some distance ahead. Yet the Mondeo in front of me kept switching his rear fogs on and off as we encountered each light patch of mist. Surely if you can see cars ahead with normal tail lights, and can see cars behind you in your mirror, you don't need the rear fogs on at all?

Also the VW Polo I got stuck behind on Thursday night on the way home from work. Never have I seen more incompetent and dithering driving.

Stopping dead on a large roundabout because they nearly missed their exit, so they could correct their mistake. (Also doing this whilst indicating the wrong direction) This nearly caused me to go into the back of them.

40mph in a 60mph limit whilst veering to the left, constant steering correction and braking. This was a straight bit of road. Unfortunately oncoming traffic didn't allow an overtaking opportunity.

Straddling the 2 approach lanes at the next roundabout so nothing behind them could turn left. (They were going straight ahead. Left lane was marked left turn only.)

At the roundabout after that, which didn't have marked approach lanes, they chose the right hand lane, and just stopped. (No other traffic on the roundabout). I chose the left lane and passed them. (We were both going straight ahead). Eventually they negotiated the roundabout and had a large queue of traffic behind them at well under the speed limit.

Then on Friday morning I got stuck behind the same car! Driving just as bad. They disappeared into the access road of neighbouring premises to my own workplace. I just hope they aren't a new employee and this is going to happen every morning!

I just couldn't believe the complete lack of awareness of anything going on around them. I wondered if they were drunk. (2 days in a row though? Surely they would have to sober up sometime!) Or it could just be someone that hasn't bothered to get a licence.

Just watched this, not a single valid reason for being on the phone from any of them.

my good man,

in the last 20 year or so there has been a huge increase in mobile ownership and use. Please could you be so kind as to show the corresponding spike in road fatalities, crashes, KSI's, call them what you will?

Many thanks

Willy Nilly.

Sound's like there would have been even fewer without mobiles then.
Good point.

At least they had the awareness to turn it off after each patch of mist, rather than leaving it on for the next two weeks.

What a crock of st.
All the things you mention, apart from 'speed limit' are contained WITHIN the car. A phone call is remote, which is the dangerous bit.

Phones aren't within the car? scratchchin I suppose it would be dangerous if you were trying to answer a phone mounted on the outside of the car. Pressing a button on my steering wheel is not.

We've already established hands free is better, I dare say you can't use Bluetooth, but a lot of newer cars now have this function.
