I mean, I know it comes with extensive free tin-worm, but hell! if it's otherwise hanging together and it'll crawl through an MOT that's like a disposable BBQ - you'll get a cracking good wafts blast out of it in the short term then give it away to charity! I've still got my 2016 purchase over 4 years later, and I only hoped it would hang together for two years!

(I literally gave my last car away to giveacar.co.uk)

I went out for a Chinese last night, my first meal that I haven't cooked for myself in over 3 months. That was good but the real treat was the walk home.

I saw a neighbour washing an immaculate Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. We started chatting and he invited me into his garage. There were 3 Ferraris, all either old or new special editions, an E-type and a Porsche 356. All were immaculate and clean enough to perform surgery on. He then showed me his Tomb Raider Land Rover which is his daily and is similarly perfect.

Lovely chap. I'm going back to drop off my contact details in hope that he becomes my new best friend.

I have almost convinced them for a Ford. Lol

The challenge given was 100000 miles/2010/£5000/petrol/automatic/sedan

The newest I could see on AT,

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202...

Anyone knows the timing kit service for this model? Any potential things to look for? Seems motorway miles from 2013.

S600
5.5 V12 twin turbo
500bhp
4.8 sec to 60

143k

Doesn't sound like it has any current issues and doesn't look rusty!

£4k must be a steal!

I'm sure this was up for sale before, and I was off to view it the next day and it was sold
This, plus -

No response from the S600TT seller, probably for the best.

This.

Wonder if something fishy is going on.

Excellent, should be an interesting story even if you don’t get the car. The geezer had about 4-5 cars for sale at the same time recently. Maybe a part time trader or a barge enthusiast culling some of the herd.

This is such a good thread, thanks to everyone for posting as it's a mine of useful information

So what is the consensus on the Mercedes W220 as a barge option, I'm quite liking the S500 and would like to go shopping armed with some knowledge?

356 I think. Painted with Chopard decals. He said it was rare. He'd had it restored and colour changed from red to grey. Showed me the book of restoration pics. Interestingly, done by the garage that is now my 'man'.

Excellent cars and a good choice. Not really premium though.

Engines are indestructible, gearboxes usually good. Air suspension can go wrong but not expensive to sort. Pre facelift 99-02 electrics can be iffy also the sills/cills can be the consistency of a Cadbury flake. The rest of the body enjoys rusting too.

03 on far better.

Sounds like a proper person.

Not our sort at all.

I'm hoping I get a go in his cars before he realises I'm not a proper person but, actually, a bit of a dick.

Pondering a second car this morning. I still have a hankering for a v8 and figure with a driveway that can easily fit two cars, why not? It need not be reliable as there is always another option!

Caveat would be that it would have to be sufficiently old to attract classic insurance, to keep costs sensible, and sufficiently easy for an amateur home mechanic to work on himself. And the purchase price should be below thread max.

I am very tempted by a non-barge, a TVR 350i. There seems to be very few for sale though. When I considered these a year or so ago there were plenty at or below thread max...

E320 petrol (posted earlier) closing in on auction end and only just hit £2,000.

Japanese import too, which should make it reassuringly unsalty underneath.

A Jaguar XJ or XK would fit the bill. Rust is the killer on the steel-bodied ones.
