Last evening at Reading Services. It went down so well on the Trivial Thread last night I thought I'd share it on here. I followed it for a while on the M4 and the driver was the epitome of moderate and considerate driving. Which meant I had the windows down in vain in anticipation of hearing the noise. Foo.
As a Trivial Thread regular responded to the pictures with "what the fking fk is that?" I should perhaps explain that it's a Marcos Mantis; a throw back to the sixties brought up to date with a bit of a bang. I think the original ones were intended to race at Le Mans in the sixties but I'm not sure if they did. The later ones did, 1995 IIRC.

Its not just a Mantis its a super rare Mantis GT. For the GT they took the 4.6 V8 Mustang engine and popped on a Vortex Supercharger.
I worked for Mantis back in the early 2000's at the London Motor Show when this car was launched. Epic !!!
Having driven a few Mantis in my time I can only say it was not the sort of car you would think of bolting a supercharger on. It was pretty quick without.
In terms of Le Mans the Mantis never raced, the race car was based on the LM road car which was essentially a forerunner of the Mantis. The #71 Le Mans car was at the NEC Classic Car Show last weekend making a rare appearance.

Brilliant! Thanks for that. I had just driven from Colchester, underwater most of the way, contemplating the sort of car which would be ideal in the conditions. In the services in Reading I saw the Mantis, the absolute antithesis of everything I had been thinking. Its not just a Mantis its a super rare Mantis GT. For the GT they took the 4.6 V8 Mustang engine and popped on a Vortex Supercharger.

I couldn't get over how quiet it was. He wasn't giving it beans but still it sounded very restrained.

2 Marcos' I came across on my travels which haven't been used quite as regularly, both on the same property, such a shame to see how they once looked compared to now

Didn't get a chance to photograph but just seen a DB7 Zagato volante, with roof down, on the back of a breakdown truck just now on the Euston road!
Didn't even know they came in drop top.
They weren't sold over here - the AR1 was LHD only (and I think only available in the US).Didn't even know they came in drop top.

Have you posted these in the "Classics left to die/rotting pics" thread in Classic Cars and Yesterdays Heroes? Much hand wringing would ensue. DSC_0383 by Danny Marsland, on Flickr
