This thread has also taught us that our economy is loosely based on the value of a cup of coffee wink

They've said that they will show the NBC content 2wks after it airs on television, although whether it will be on the free or paid for channel is anyone's guess.
Yes, later in the video they say it will be on the free channel, but this contradicts what is said earlier about NBC showing "exclusive content you can't find anywhere else". They don't say that NBC will air videos before they are available online or anything like that.

Basically, they've not made a very good job of publicising these changes and the last thing they need are any more barriers to people signing on the dotted line.

p.s. I fixed the link in my previous post.
I too was irked by this, but took it to be just a bit of auto-pilot marketing speak (sounds like he's used to saying "exclusive content you won't find anywhere else").

Generally though the communication is absolutely dreadful, and I tend to blame JF, though that's based on nothing other than my perception of how they operate and may therefore be unfair.

I get my Coffee from Waitrose.

Read an interesting article about paid vs free content and where the music industry is going wrong vs the TV providers getting it right. It basically revolved around the fact people are prepared to pay for quality content. The problem is of course getting the content and making people want to pay.
People will pay HBO money for GoT as there is no alternative (ignore illegal options for now). Niche car videos, not so sure, there is lots of competition for free that is good enough. So unless you have a particular affinity to CH then why pay?

It's £25 a year.

When you consider you can spend £3something on a weekly copy of autocars press-release-and-made-up car-in-photoshop weekly it's not really a lot of money.
True, it's peanuts. I like CH's videos, plus I like Autocar's, Petrolicious's, XCar's, Jay Leno's, Motor Trend's, evo's and Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars videos too. So what happens if they all start asking for £25/year to view their content?

And was Chris's LaFerrari review really any better than (or even as good as) evo's or Autocar's? I'm guessing the people who paid for it also buy bottled water.

Well I'm out unsubscribed to Drive done! It's time I gotta a life anyway instead of waisting time sitting in front of a pc!! Especially to pay for a channel when there are better ones for free yes it's only £25 but where does that mentality end? An American economy 15 trillion in debt!! Lol....
Sorry CH your good at what you do but not brilliant and people that compare to Jeremy Clarkson well will there ever be another motoring journo that rises to heights as JC even if he is past his best now,

Lots of very good points
I agree that this doesn't look like a perfect decision at this point in time for CH. Many online businesses ( it will be part of his livelihood after all) start slow and grow over time, so getting people hooked at a low cost and continuing their subscription over a long period of time is the type of revenue you want. £25 doesnt sound much per month, but for only a few hours of online content per month -in isolation- it feels expensive. It feels different from renting a tv show or movie for some reason, because we have for so long had this kind of content for free.

I enjoy CH content - engaging, affable and a talented wheelman, and i hope this succeeds for him , but i cannot help thinking that he might have been better doing this on his own rather than being associated with Drive. I guess he is tied down contractually? The other Drive contributors are fairly dire IMO and not worth paying for.

I wonder how long it will be before one of the print magazine starts limiting access to (some of) their videos to people who buy the physical magazine...

it's been tried and failed many times just because it's hard to police. The usual way is to have a code printed in the magazine to unlock content but they online as soon as they hit the shelves.

Farah has revealed that the level of content one will receive for the princely sum of 25 quid is less than was produced in the first period of Drive's existence. He has indicated that we will receive, for our 2.50 a month, around 3 hours content. 3 hours content?
If true, that's a bit crap. Although doesn't look too far off the mark considering we are nearly a week from launch and there's only one bloody video.

Can anyone with Drive+ check on the number of views of the full LaF video? That would give us a rough estimate on the number of subscribers...

i've consumed a large chunk of this thread and will make a comment most of us seem to have missed in all the doom-mongering. the americans, canadians, aussies and people from elsewhere arent nearly as tightarsed as we brits are. we aren't the only market, drive isn't destined to fail, but probably will become less aimed at brits.

That may not be enough to sustain a channel long term. We'll see. I wish them good luck, but wouldn't bet on them. Too much free content around, viewers are spoiled for choice.

Cmoose: I only see one video - "Guide to Drive"

So far we have on the "Guide to /DRIVE" video 589 Likes and 3,559 Dislikes, not exactly a scientific study but I think this idea is going to bomb, hard.

I've always been on the fence when it comes to /Drive, I like Chris videos but I don't think the rest of the content is up to much, I certainly don't think it stands up to being made premium

Regardless, I wish all those involved good luck and hope I can say I was wrong.

Interesting article on the re-engineering of YouTube's monetisation platform, very relevant to this discussion.

That 4.1 RS is quite frankly sexual. The colour, the noise, the power, sooooooo much want.

Also a fairly entertaining new vid on the freebie channel about the making of the BMW 235i drift video, that all the petulant unsubscribers are missing and half the commenters saying "I thought you weren't doing videos on the free channel any more".
