Loving all the space in my Volvo V70

Currently in the boot I've got an umbrella, a bottle of Meguiars glass cleaner, a microfibre cloth and an old envelope with a shopping list on the back.

So, I wanted a cheap to run car, with a big boot and decent interior space. I bought a 2015 VW golf 1.6d bluemotion estate... it's brill.

I live in Germany, so I drive it on the Autobahn a lot. Last week I drove 190 miles to an airport, starting at 1:30am. After a while my foot got tired from pressing the accelerator into the floor, so I ended up driving it flat out with the cruise control set to about 135mph. Up steepish hills it slowed to an indicated 118mph, but on the flat it cruised, pretty quietly at around indicated 125mph. Average fuel consumption for the trip was just over 34mpg, but I did have to slow for roadworks for a good 20-30 miles of the trip.

Lovely, I have had both an Octavia 2 1.6 Greenline and a Leon ST 1.6 Ecomotive and found them both great cars/engines for this sort of thing.

This is currently up for auction on collecting cars. Nothing to do with me personally either the car or the auction site. I just love the car. Wish I could afford to bid. Wondering what the reserve might be on something as rare as this that’s had a full engine rebuild?

I agree entirely.

I've had a handful of the various iterations of V70 over the years and think that they are a very 'sorted' shape; handsome and 'grown-up' with some thoughtful design touches.

That's very interesting. Distronic sounds great, but how do you combine it with Waze? Is the interior as comfortable and do you feel as though the 212 enhances a drive to the SoF anyhow? Interior comfort, perhaps?

Here's us on the Gorge du Verdun this evening, with Mrs Bolide driving and not using gear braking lol

Nice.

Waze and Distronic not integrated except that as the limits increase and decrease on the screen I just flick the Distronic lever up and down accordingly.

All E Classes are great mile munchers. You could do the same drive in a 210 E55 and it would be effortless. It's just the tech that updates a bit in each iteration. i prefer the display in the 212 but that's minor. More toys eg tyre pressure monitor which was handy as I had a slow puncture in one of the rears and could keep an eye on it. I like the LED lighting at night - another minor thing that just adds a bit to the experience.

In physical terms the steering is a little tighter, the body control a little better, noise supression and wind noise a bit better and so on.

Prefer the Dynamic seats in the 211 though. Like the orthapaedic ones in the C43's they had better side bolstsers

+1 for the mile munchers.

I drove from the south of France to London in a day. A few coffees and water helped, but the car soaks up the bumps, is solid as a rock in all weathers.

Loads of torque from the 320cdi makes for effortless and safe lane changes and an 18 gal tank cuts down on grief at les gaz stations (and a peage tag!). Mrs nobrakes was on standby to take over, but I was surprised how ok I was at that distance.

The estate makes for relaxing holidays as you can bring the kitchen sink too.

Great pic from the Gorge de Verdun. Hope you enjoyed the hairpins, cliff edges and tunnels too - we took the eclass there too. Spectacular.

It was great looking when released, and it remains so. Timeless design is timeless!

A lot of people knock the small capacity turbo motors, but once they are engineered to be reliable they have big efficiency benefits for high speed cruising. It’s also fun to drive an eco model fast.

My first Estate. Only had it a couple of weeks, but I really like it. It’s an E220d so it’s not particularly fast but it handles well for a big car, 55MPG on a run is great as I do a lot of miles and it’s got loads of tech. It’s a very high spec example - Premium Plus, COMAND Online, Widescreen Cockpit, 360 Cameras, and the Driving Assistance Package which includes Distronic and Drive Pilot so it can steer for you, it’ll will read the Smart Motorway gantry speed limits and automatically change the cruise control speed. You can even park it with your phone standing outside the car!

I was surprised how much of a step up it feels compared to the C350e I’ve run for the last 2 years.

I had a 2.4T in Mistral Green which was very easy on the eye. My favourite details were the coat hook located on the back of the headrest of the front passenger seat, the clip integrated into the windscreen on the driver's side for displaying tickets etc and the fold out bracket on the back of the centre console that could house a little bin bag or hold a 1.5L bottle of gin/moonshine/water.
