Gents. Apologies for the obvious, but I must admit to being rather enamoured with this:

http://autotrader.mobi/used-cars/advert/2012174664...

I'm doing some serious motorway munching of late, I reckon ideal family wagon with ~20% better empeegees. I've also been eyeing late E46 330i Tourings, but reckon a late E39 is the right call.
At £3k, yes but not at £5k. Whether you're a fan of it or not, that is E60 money and if you don't like the E60 is probably better spent on an A6 Avant Quattro or something.
yup. i noticed an E60 530d with around 110k for cheaper.

i don't care what people say, on non-RFT's the ride is really quite good.
Having had a look, a decent E60 530d Touring can't be had for much less than £7k which is quite a bit more than the E39 above - just don't see it as a £5k car even though there are plenty in the classifieds at up to £6k.

Yes it's a bit steep because it's a dag dag, but there's none around at cheaper money unless you want moon miles. It's on a 53 with full BMW SH and is a good buy at 4.5 I reckon.

Early E60 interiors aren't all that and besides you are looking at 3k more anyway.

That is not E60 530d Sport money at all and neither is it really previous gen A6 money either, sub £5k tends to buy the 96-04 shape A6 that was in direct competition with the E39.

I wouldn't buy that car either because it's a 530d and the same 530i would be a grand less with less bork-tendancy, but the E60 wouldnt factor into my reason why not.

fir enough HR - go for it....is it a case of the 728i has to go before the E39 comes in? if so....i wouldn't bank on a particularly quick sale of these cars these days frown

would have been funny if i was looking for a 728i 6-7 months later than i did, huh hehe

Not bad for a grand (ish): http://beta.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

A better clean engine bay pic:

Facelifted double VANOS 2.8 for a good price and a very well written/detailed walkaround (including minor items of bork) description of the car that few vendors in these murky waters would ever bother with. Speaks to being the sort of buyer and previous owner I'd be happier to deal with for such a punt.
Want! Mileage puts me off though.....

ETA jonny want to swap your 330 for my integra wink

Liking that Touring, there's a properly nice motor in there with a bit of tidying.

Perhaps not large enough to be a proper barge, but I can't help but feel love for this:

Like it. My Dad had a Tornado Red 90 with the 2.3 10v engine. The proprietor of the local garage who looked after it had a 2.3 20v Quattro which I thought was amazing.
My dad had one too back in 1990, it was the same colour as this, but it was a quattro and had air con. E290 HPF if anyone knows it..

Would I be utterly retarded if I expected this to get me too Germany and back for the N24 next week?

Should be capable of doing that easily, as long as you respect it's age and don't redline it everywhere.

Oh come off it, its a grand! It doesn't really matter what mileage it has on it for a grand and I doubt it's about to explode just becuase of the figure on the odometer hehe

Agreed.

I'm more inclined to trust the mileage is genuine as opposed to many at twice the price or more with half the *claimed* miles...

this. someone on the 7 series register has a 728i with WELL over 200k on the clock and his is still going fine.

well maintained they're fine. only worry with high mileage is gearbox really, the engine can take it easily. i've noticed you can get a BMW driveline warranty (includes gearbox); what happens if your gearbox blows up then you suddenly take this policy out? hehe

It's a cliche but mileage really is meaningless unless you've got a cast iron stack of history telling you what has and hasn't been done its hard to tell the low mileage minter from the shop-run-special on shagged suspension or the high mileage pristine motorway wafter from the ex-minicab. The only really safe to thing to do is let mileage guide the price and condition and history guide whether you'd actually buy it.

It's not as if even a low mileage (And remember low mileage on these seems to be 100k!) 12 year old car which has never had anything done in the suspension department is going to drive like new, is it?

It's a really nicely written, detailed advert as well. I bet it's as good a bet as anything else at this money.

The warranty doesn't start for 30 days - I'd be interested to know if the date/time of failure is logged in the diagnostic system.

12mpg I think was my reason last time and on paper, the figures don't impress me too much. Never driven one, mind.

I love both of these, once upon a time a Granada Scorpio and a Sierra Ghia would have been aspirational to a lot of folk.

Generally speaking, gearbox bork and expensive/massively labour intensive belt changes that as a result get skipped.
