To start thanks to all for your suggestions and links to vehicles for sale for me to take a look at - the R class mentioned a few pages back is interesting- I’m sure my offspring would welcome the individual seats in the rear but ultimately it’s not doing it for me. Was going to view a 5 series touring on Saturday but just been informed it’s sold. I’ve received a link to a car on my WhatsApp- I’m guessing from one of you gentlemen out there via the forum - not sure how but hey..
So what do you all think of this ??
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...
Solid service history - the recurring advisory about slightly corroded brake lines for the last few mots worry me a bit - wonder why it’s not been addressed before it gets out of hand
Actually contacted this dealer a couple of weeks ago re a 3.0 e class but it was in the process of being sold - dealer said he’d contact me to let me know if it sold or not and true to his word he did a couple of days later to comfirm it had gone so pretty good with his personal service
Not being at all familiar with mercs Is there anything I need to know about this model and this car in particular?? Is the 270 a good engine or am I better off going for the 6 cylinder engine ???
Many thanks Ron
Headlamp / bonnet / bumper fit is absolutely miles out. Might have had a bump?

Other than that, looks nice!

Yes noticed that
Panel gaps bonnet to wings and wings to bumper etc look ok and pretty even
But something odd on the offside - the inner headlamp looks to be sitting too far back in the recess and the gap at that point between bonnet and bumper looks bigger than on the near side ...

Yup, I’d want to understand why that is, but that aside it looks very smart to me.

I think you’re better with an I5 or I6 engine than the later V6 I cleverly chose.

Whoever fitted that leaper needs to have a nose piercing forcibly installed. In the middle of their forehead.

Reinforcing the cheap 75 man is better than cheap Jag man suggestion even further.

Jags (and Rovers) really seem to attract the type of bloke who sticks a load of leaper badges or ROVER badges or Union Flag /chrome tat all over their cars.

It makes me cringe sometimes, when I see an otherwise nice car that's been "Savilled".

Don't wish for that that! it's the demand for fuel that keeps the price down.
Is this completely true? Oil will always be pumped out of the ground even if transportation isn't the primary industry (for instancebplastics, and a load of other industries I'm sure). If your distilling crude (or whatever the correct term is) petrol is one of the by-products. Less demand for similar-ish supply should equal cheaper fuel but I appreciate there are a number of other factors that have a bearing on this, maybe even a more significant bearing than i have considered.

How do others assess the situation?
If I remember aviation fuel is of a higher (is that the correct term?) octane or / and is a more complex hydrocarbon and should in theory be more expensive to refine; of course it is actually cheaper than petrol (or at least it used to be), I assume because of a lower demand, although it could be priced higher but the percentage of taxation is lower ... ramblerambleramble.

All this talk of 75s and S-types and over on "shed of the week" they come up with the real answer to that size question, the GS300 probably a better car full stop

The big problem with a GS is an LS. They both cost the same at that age, so why wouldn't you LS it?

Following yesterday’s quite brilliant analogies of your atypical Rover driver (final salary Gerald will stay with me for years) I’d love (hate) to think what could be made of your average Lexus driver biggrin

That's like saying the problem with the S is the XJ, I really don't understand why anyone would buy an S but each to there own

This is a slightly tenuous post, but bear with me - I wasn't sure where else to share.
I was lucky enough to have a white diesel Audi saloon about an inch off my back bumper for a mile or so on the M8 today. It reminded me of this (massively ironic) ad:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIQ-283wKgg
I believe it dates back to 1994 and was a really brilliant observation of your typical aspirational BMW/Porsche driver of the time. At what point did Audi decide that actually they wanted to own this particular market? As long as I can remember there being an S-Line edition of any model, Audi seem have been the weapon of choice for the young thruster.
If you own an Audi then I apologise.
There. I have unburdened myself.

I 95% agree, however the size of the X350 XJ can be a pain with parking and city drivingand it does feel a big old thing. The S-Type I had was definitely more appropriate for driving at more than 7/10ths. I wouldn't buy an S over an XJ or a GS over an LS, but I do understand why someone might.

I like a nice watch too, I just hope I don't increase my bell-end-quotient by the way I choose to brag about it. Sadly on our (perhaps) sister thread, many fail that important indicator of self-awareness and good taste.

Like I say, it's been a long day!
After reading this I wandered over to look at this thread out of curiosity. My word the bell-endery there is like a Harry Enfield sketch, except it's entirely un-ironic. They seem like people I'd want to avoid.

Now back to boasting that the blue smoke from my old barge is a more lustrous blue than you'd get from a lesser barge.

Headlight alignment issue needs further investigation but may be minor. Paint looks good on all panels from the photos. However my concern is buying something with a potential problem from a home trader. I suspect there would be little comeback if a significant problem emerged.

Also, and maybe I am being a bit harsh, do you not think he is trying to make it look like a private sale with the photography on his front drive? A bit sneaky (or snakey as my daughters would say)

Plenty of these out there. I would look elsewhere

Leaper aside that is highly tempting, checking the trains it's £100 to get down to Bracknell from near Chester... Ludicrous.

Ooofff, expensive but under budget (not checked MOT history).

Can someone buy this and sell it to me in 6 months?

Wiring loom replaced too.
