Wow, V4.

Haven’t they always been an expensive indulgence? I remember looking at plates in the back of the telegraph or auto car when I was a kid in the 1980’s and thinking some of the best ones were the price of a great car.

My late father said there a total waste of money lol why do you want another plate when a car already comes with one he'd say , but I like them.

I actually think an expensive plate is a better investment than an expensive car. It doesn’t matter what fuel we are forced to use in whatever personal transport we use. I believe there will always be a need for a registration plate to identify it therefore they will always be relevant.

No, not always.

If an distinctive plate dating back to a time when plates were short because there weren't many cars on the road has been retained then apart from the transfer fees from vehicle to vehicle it won't have cost either the original person it was issued too or the current custodian anything at all.

These are the top 5 results of the latest DVLA online auction which ended yesterday:

SA22 RAH £45,033

All prices include vat etc..
I really struggle to see the value in plates like this (unless Sazzrah is a name?)

Yes that really is silly money for a standard issue format plate with two irrelevant additional letters in it. Going to be very limited on what it can go on for a while too I suppose.

I paid about £3k for a XXX #X format plate last year that was as close as I could get to my 5 letter (reasonably common) surname, and I thought that was a bit dear at the time!

I was stumped by that one too, and figured I must have missed something there. The price seems crazy!

This popped up yesterday during a search for something else - 'MC 11' not found on the DVLA site so probably scrapped or exported...?

Maybe on retention.. it was certainly cherished when that photo was taken, as the plate is from 1917.
