Looks an absolute bargain for £1500.Not surprised.
That's a strong contender for the best all-round car ever made, in great colours and with LPG, for the price of a nice telly.

Where the current 5 Series might well be better than an E39, it's only a smidge better than today's Passat / V90 / A6 whatever. Maybe it is better than an E-Class by a gnat's, maybe not quite as good.
E39 was a revelation.
I hadn't driven the SL for a couple of months, and thought I'd go and give the battery a charge and take it out last week. However it started first time! The work done to make it start and minimise battery leak seems to have worked.
Looking at the plates... they are a bit nasty. Screw holes but stuck on, with a Surrey Used Car Centre sticker applied thats now peeling off.
We had some plate related discussion here recently - which company to order from, and what style was the consensus?

Whilst I love an E39 sport as much as the next man, no longer is it one of the best all-round cars ever made. The new 5 series (G-something or the other) runs rings around it. Every bit as good riding, better handling, more creature comforts, more powerful (depending on model) and more efficient. A late F10 is also a handsome looking car IMO. Someone I know has just picked up a brand new 540i....lovely!
True, but six months leasing would buy this 530i outright! Cost is also a factor in "best all round" shirley?0a said:

I'm keeping an eye out for a tidy '129 but most 2 tone early cars seem to be 6 cylinders ATM. I really want a 500.Looking at the plates... they are a bit nasty. Screw holes but stuck on, with a Surrey Used Car Centre sticker applied thats now peeling off.

You bored of it yet?

Sorry, when I get back driving it I remember how it's really quick. And I paid for the full restoration of the body and repaint. The SL looks fantastic. You bored of it yet?
It's almost like the 190 2.6 I collect tomorrow morning
Went to see the A6. Owned by a JLR engineer whose new role will take him more towards Woking apparently - lucky sod - so he needs to get something more suitable for the miles.
It was FILTHY and the bodywork was a little tatty in places, but it'll clean up fine. It drove beautifully. Lovely muted woofling noise! According to HowManyLeft it's one of twelve they ever sold. I can see why buyers would have been put off by 26mpg combined, but I wonder how many of the TDIs proved to be a false economy...
I've offered £4k. Waiting to hear back.

Well I've just experienced the bum-clenching thrill of the first drive of a new car. I've owned the SLC for a few months now, but apart from a very short test drive with the mechanic after some initial work, had barely seen it, let alone driven it. Today was collection day.
Couple of thread-givens: fuel reserve light lit, check; unsure of route home, check; cash in a brown envelope, check; and the number of the recovery firm close to hand, natch. I'm afraid I broke thread-rules and forgot to take a fuel station picture. BLUF is that we made it, and it now sits on my drive.
First impressions are positive, but it's very evidently a 70s car. Ride is excellent and the big fat tyres really soak-up bumps. Visibility is terrific. It sits comfortably at 3-figure speeds and goes pretty well. I also noticed that there is a lot of wind noise and the fuel economy is laughable. I think I'm going to like it! The rest of today will be spent with cleaning products.

It's not one of twelve - that was the allroad v8 C6 (Like mine). They sound around 100-200 normal A6 V8's, around 60-65% sold were Saloons, the rest Avants. It was FILTHY and the bodywork was a little tatty in places, but it'll clean up fine. It drove beautifully.
