Eventually got round to sorting my bog standard, new build type, double garage out,...which had become a dumping ground for the families detritus...rather than a nice place to park cars

So got those nice chaps from garage concepts in, gave them a fairly small budget, and and brief which said loads of hidden storage required.
.
.

Into this, with all the crap hidden either on racking behind electric roller shutter, or in the loft

Really blown away with what they’ve achieved to be honest.....just need the cars back now.......and to hide the fobs from the mrs so she can’t hide anymore junk in there
wow, looks great... i'd love to do something like that with mine... I've got a double that contains most of the crap that people don't want in the house, and very little room for, you know, cars and stuff.

These guys? https://www.garageconcepts.co.uk/

Looks really good, interested in what ballpark 'fairly small' comes in at? wink

I hope to embark upon a new garage build in the coming months. I have designed it myself with car storage and workshop in mind and the plan would be that the centre section will be a workshop with ramp/lift and the sides will be capable of stacking cars should I end up adding more!

The architects have done the below drawing to my design but i will be adding some more narrow high level windows to the back walls. There is currently a 5 x 5.5m deep garage already attached to the house so i'll be removing its end wall and continuing out with the new design. The roof will be a flat but angled type with the gradient running from front to back. The doors will be roller type so as not to impinge on internal height etc. The angled piece on the end will serve as bicycle storage and workshop. I will mount a car charger on the end wall too where my daily will be parked.

I haven't quite decided on flooring but it will likely be tiled but this thread has some fantastic inspiration for me to work with!!

I already have a pair of the Automech Services floor mounted (not flush) lifts but will likely sell them and get a two post as I think that will give me the most flexibility.

Lighting will be LED panels similar to GFWilliams ones as they look very clean and will be a good look.

I may put internal drainage in the workshop section in case I take cleaning the cars any more seriously and want to wash inside. I live in the north of Scotland so sunny days can be a rarity and when they do come I like to be out in a car!

Between my father and I we have some quite valuable classics so i will likely build in a dehumidifier and/or put in some heating that can be used from time to time.

Anyway, planning is still being applied for as part of a much larger adjustment to the house but the garage will be done first and then the house contents will be moved into it for the house re-work to be done. I'll keep this thread updated on the plans.

I’ve been spending a few hours in the garage each day, and it’s slowly coming together. Quite rewarding doing it all myself, even though it won’t be as well as Jon’s garage!

Will be interested to see the progress and thanks for posting. I'm converting a barn into a large living space that will allow me to exhibit two cars and I'm making my existing 7 bay garage/ workshop deeper and putting in a new floor. Will be posting the new designs in a months time. Will be interested to see what you do on the flooring

All you guys doing proper work...

No pictures as the garage is currently full of furniture we want shot off but I've taken in some of the ideas from here and insulated sealed garage door, making sure to seal all holes at the top and bottom of the louvers.

I cannot believe how much difference a tenners worth of foil backed insulation and a roll of aluminium have made to the temps in there, open the door and its like being back in the house! Despite insulating the back of the plastic "windows" the garage is brighter due to the light reflection.

I also decided the lighting wasn't good enough and ordered a 60 deform-able LED light from amazon to repalce the 24w spiral energy saver. Arrived but the B22 adapter was missing from the box, asked amazon for a small credit to order one and they refused. What Amazon did instead was refund me for the light as it wasn't worth them getting it back. £1.50 later and its fitted, massive difference! Time will tell how long it lasts but as its cost me nothing it doesn't really matter.

https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07W48ZDNF/r...

Next job, clear some of the crap out and paint the exposed breezeblock wall. A neighbour just did this and just gave in after 3 coats with a brush/roller has anybody used one of the airless paint sprayers?

My workshop is going under a renovation currently! I live on my family's farm and my current workshop was just a dumping ground for old machinery and junk, this was how it was about 6 years ago...

It got cleared to this state and has been used on and off over the last 6 years

(Again from 6 years ago) The space can fit 3ish cars in...

By the start of this year the workshop was getting into a state again as I'm extremely messy. There was still a lot of farm junk, the old skool Fordson was still in place, barely any lights worked and it was generally unpleasant to work in...

From the start of this year a friend wants to share the unit and wanted to help sort it out (for his benefit too!) and he's kicked me and the unit into gear... So far we have

- Removed a lot of the remaining junk and racking
- Cemented the floor where needed
- Binned the two half working flourescent lights for 6 new LED battens - much better
- Painted the walls white
- Installed wifi!

Still to come
- Ordered 73m2 of Plasfloor tiling for the floor
- Hopefully order a new Automotech 2 post lift
- Tool chests and better work benches
- Much longer term, replace the leaking asbestos roof... This unit is 1/4 of the overall building that needs the roof, guttering and then doors replacing so not a small job!

I did. Best £60 rental I have EVER spent. 100% the way forward.

I coated a 1200 sq ft virgin block walled garage in 20 minutes.

Be aware to double the amount of paint you budget for though. It bails through it.

I bought one off amazon for about €45. Masking off becomes the longer job than the painting but was impressed. Watered the paint down and it coated very well and ridiculously fast. My garage is 100 m2 and didn't fancy doing it with a brush. I posted my garage previously on here (but got lambasted for the LED lighting..) but as I was doing only bottom half black it needed masking - if you were doing the whole wall white would just need to mask floors off.

I borrowed one ( probably from the same place you did) but bottled it - thought I'd end up getting paint everywhere , not just on the walls smile

Not at all... that and pointless old petrol cans, signs... frankly some of it costs ridiculous amounts these days, but occasionally something catches your eye

Looks nice, but is there room in the design for rudimentary tools and storage?
Your list of cars would indicate that you probably do some tinkering to keep the fleet running.

Looks like there will be some space in the centre section for a work bench or two?
Would recommend used steel office cabinets for storage (should be plenty available with everyone wfh)
Have you thought about walling off the bottom area .. so you have somewhere to do messy dusty stuff grinding/blasting/sanding / painting... so it doesn't go on the cars. But I guess the bikes would then have the go in a shed elsewhere

  1. never enough space

Hi Hol,

Yes there will be plenty of space for that. I have a large roller cabinet with worktop and vice with all my tools in it and lots and lots of racking at present that holds all of the other garage detritus. It will sit at the back of the centre section with some racks either side. The other racks too can sit against the back wall along the the length of the garage or in the end 'bike' section. It will likely not be as clean a look as some of beautifully hidden cabinetry of others in this thread but I would like to live with it a while first and see how it goes. If my son gets into karting for example then I could image one of the wedges between the centre bay and a wing being of use to him so things will be mobile for a while.

Some sense here, rather than have 2 cars <corner> workshop <corner> 2 cars, could you have 2 cars <corner> 2 more cars <corner> and then put the workshop on the end with a stud wall and door to keep all the general workshop mess/noise/sparks in a confined area and as far away from the house itself as possible for noise/fire reasons.
