Hi All,

Reluctantly going to sell my W124 frown

Expecting another baby in October and what with the dogs we won't all fit in my wife's Volvo V40 or the Merc so I'm going to buy an estate.

It's been flawless in the 14 months I've owned it and don't want to sell it but I don't have space and would need the money to put towards my next car.

Agh! I’m going to have to remove myself from PH for a while until that’s safely in the hands of its new owner. God I miss that car badly.

TTFN!
Come on John, do the right thing. You know that you'll regret not buying it.

What would happen if I were to use too big/too powerful a battery in a car than it needs, Chaps?

I'm only asking because I recently took advantage of one of those GSF 'special days' and bought a new a battery at good price. It was for an E39 525i Saloon that's going to go to France soon anyway, probably wasn't needed anyway and now (for various reasons), I can't be arsed to put it in that car.

I've just stuck it on a trickle charger now in the garage. I think size-wise is would fit in the 190E but is probably more than that car needs and at the moment that car has a pretty new, good battery anyway.

Worth keeping it for the 190E or problems with too powerful a battery?

A clear answer to this.

Buy a new barge to suit the battery!

Ford badge and 4 cylinders, so expecting disappointment. However it's a 2.0 from a Focus ST170 in a Cortina estate, which I think is cool as a cucumber. £3995.

Would love that. My dad had a MK5 Cortina estate when i was a nipper.
Brilliant! Just needs the wheels sorted. Or, maybe even leave them as they are a bit, well, not quite right, but they hint that it’s been breathed on / chavved so to speak.

Zero downside apart from size and weight.

I know this is under thread budget but picking this up on Wednesday. It has a knocking/rattling on the front left wheel over bumps and rough road. The MOT looks clean, but when you put your foot on the front wheel and push the car rocks. Does this mean control arms?

Assuming that isn't fundamentally broken, it looks like a great buy!

I put a 3.0 Senator-rated battery in an Astra 1.6. Nothing caught fire and no one died. smile It started very well.

Nothing assuming it will fit in the battery holder.
Other things to watch - are the posts the same way round as the old one, and are they the same style for your cables?

If it is control arms they aren't too hard a job - even for a ham-fisted moron like me!

Is a rattle usually droplinks?

That's the 3 tricky spots - same sized posts, fit into the holder (as it definitely needs securing) and the +/- the right way round. Guess who forgot the last one once upon a time and connected without thinking? frown

Had a recent clutch, radiator, oil breather pipes. Also has a huge service history with everything receipt included. It needs some TLC, and pretty grim inside.

As long as it's been well cared for mechanically, a bit of cosmetic work shouldn't be a problem. However these hide corrosion very well, and they rust pretty much everywhere. But for £500 if it lasts you the winter you can't go wrong!

In theory I like these a lot, particularly the 550i versions, but the reality of BMW V8 ownership appears to be a regular wallet shafting in an attempt to get the oil and coolant to stay inside the engine. These V8s are rare here, but in countries where they are not they have a terrible reputation that seems well deserved.

You expect old barges to cost some money to run, but semi regular repair bills of 20 - 25% of the cars value because of really crap design issues doesn't sit well with me. Even Jaguar had worked out how to keep the fluids in the engine and not on the road by the mid 90s.

You can pick up a new looking E350 estate for under 10 bags these days. I can’t help but think they are a helluva lot of car for the money.
