What would happen if I were to use too big/too powerful a battery in a car than it needs, Chaps?
Nothing assuming it will fit in the battery holder.
Other things to watch - are the posts the same way round as the old one, and are they the same style for your cables?
That's the 3 tricky spots - same sized posts, fit into the holder (as it definitely needs securing) and the +/- the right way round. Guess who forgot the last one once upon a time and connected without thinking? frown
Thanks all! I had to go and check/measure etc. but the posts are the right way round and the correct size and it looks like it will just fit into the tray as well! smile

Good fortune like that is usually the prelude to some other misfortune in Bargeland though, isn't it? YIN and YANG....

You can pick up a new looking E350 estate for under 10 bags these days. I can’t help but think they are a helluva lot of car for the money.
That's what I'm looking at buying if I sell the Green Goddess

In theory I like these a lot, particularly the 550i versions, but the reality of BMW V8 ownership appears to be a regular wallet shafting in an attempt to get the oil and coolant to stay inside the engine. These V8s are rare here, but in countries where they are not they have a terrible reputation that seems well deserved.

You expect old barges to cost some money to run, but semi regular repair bills of 20 - 25% of the cars value because of really crap design issues doesn't sit well with me. Even Jaguar had worked out how to keep the fluids in the engine and not on the road by the mid 90s.
Thank you for diverting me away from what could have been a completely unnecessary dive into hours of lust-driven research into a car I have no need for or realistic prospect of actually owning.

I know this is under thread budget but picking this up on Wednesday. It has a knocking/rattling on the front left wheel over bumps and rough road. The MOT looks clean, but when you put your foot on the front wheel and push the car rocks. Does this mean control arms?

Assuming that isn't fundamentally broken, it looks like a great buy!
Had a recent clutch, radiator, oil breather pipes. Also has a huge service history with everything receipt included. It needs some TLC, and pretty grim inside.
As long as it's been well cared for mechanically, a bit of cosmetic work shouldn't be a problem. However these hide corrosion very well, and they rust pretty much everywhere. But for £500 if it lasts you the winter you can't go wrong!
All the arches look good, and I quick check underneath didnt show anything. MOT history looked clear and no obvious signs of corrosion.

How much do you all pay your mechanics?

I have asked the local one to put my car up on his ramps for thirty minutes after he fits my tyres on Saturday, just to poke around and make sure there are no hidden rust nasties and the suspension looks okay. He wants £45 + VAT for 30 minutes - that's a £118 hourly rate!

£50 plus VAT per hour. £60 diagnosis fee waived if the work required is carried out. Been quoted £180 for a major service on my 190e. I think that's reasonable.

Hi All,

Reluctantly going to sell my W124 frown

Expecting another baby in October and what with the dogs we won't all fit in my wife's Volvo V40 or the Merc so I'm going to buy an estate.

It's been flawless in the 14 months I've owned it and don't want to sell it but I don't have space and would need the money to put towards my next car.

https://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/w12...

Agh! I’m going to have to remove myself from PH for a while until that’s safely in the hands of its new owner. God I miss that car badly.

TTFN!
Come on John, do the right thing. You know that you'll regret not buying it.
You’re not helping Harry!

Must not click on the advert, must not click . . .
I'll happily pick you up from the airport like you did for me biggrin

I was hoping you wouldn't notice I'm selling it. I love it so much but need to get an estate car and can't afford to have both frown
If that had air con I'd have bought it by now. Lovely motor.

There's an estate thread going on at the moment:

Budget started at 9k and has steadily come down.

The bloke can't make a decision; I have some sympathy!

Whereabouts is this? The question of location is of vital relevance to this question. Garage businesses take up quite a bit of space. The business rates and rent vary tremendousy according to where the garage is, and are likely to be the largest costs for his business before he takes a penny in wages.

London Zone 2 so would expect it to be expensive, wasn't sure if that was the sort of rate to expect or not. As suggested by some in my separate thread, perhaps it is just because sticking it on the ramps is a pita.

Sounds reasonable for London then. Don't forget that he has the inconvenience of making sure an all day job or MOT isn't on the relevant ramp at that time.

Family friend who is a mobile mechanic and he charges me £30 per hour, or might quote me for a job depending what it is.

I normally always order and provide the parts I want him to fit.

Ha yeah! Although it's a pretty simple car I guess.
