Dear Beards,

Please help. Mate of mine has 4K burning a hole in his pocket.

He wants a weekend thing that an keep up when we go off hooning around wales and can handle the odd track day.

Suggested 986 box , Can't handle the hair dresser bit.

Smoked around in a 951 for a year or so and loved it but they are way out of budget now! Would an NA 944 be a terrible shout?
RX8 PZ (Prodrive tweaked one)?

yes I'm with you bungle.

Definitely something strangely and irrationally desirable about them.
It's the wheels.
Same for me. hehe

But, you do realise the a RHD GT is not the same as a LHD GT?

Same colour and 'frock' but different engine internals?
Yes. These have been done to death over the course of many volumes. £20k would but a lot of engine modifications if the differences were important. Can't see the 60k euro value in the car, personally.

Define "internals", though.

As I understood it (and forgive me, it's been a few years), the LHD cars were blueprinted and wore a freer flowing manifold, which the RHD cars couldn't have sue to the steering rack.

Otherwise the internals were the same, non?

But what I'd give for a nice shiny red GT2 silly

I doubt it's the amount of cabbage they've speculatively got it up for.

Even if it is a GT2.
A friend of mine bought an immaculate one for 14KEuro back in 2010.

I doubt any M engine has ever been blueprinted from factory...

Happily proved wrong, though!

Edit to add Road going M engine biggrin

I was looking at that very advert just the other day thinking these were an interesting curio. And then I popped into West London Audi and had a poke around an S1 (which some of the reviews suggest is actually a slightly better car). Trouble is, it felt like I was sitting on a dining chair, even with the seat in its lowest position.

Strangely temptng though as a little nippy, grippy pocket rocket.
I drove one recently and was pleasantly surprised by it. As ever, the other VAG offerings give better value for money, so you'd really have to want the S1 over the other choices

The S1 weighs as much as an S3, so becomes rather pointless. Nice wheels though. Reminds me of old Renault 5 GTT.

Quite. I looked at them when I bought my E36 Evo.

They wouldn't be alone in the current environment of escalating prices but I don't see where the additional value is that makes it worth 5 times more than a top notch M3. Obviously someone must be paying if they're all listed at that kind of number, assuming they are selling.

The S1 is a bit lighter than the A1Q however

£14k for a pre-Highline with comfort seats and a missing service book, in need of both a new exhaust and returning to its proper ride height, looks a bit optimitic to me.

If it's in otherwise great condition then I don't thank that's unrealistic. £10k is easy to drop on a 6 to bring it back to health. The e28 M535 is climbing to 5 figures for a reasonable one, the m5 is long gone from £10k levels. A lowish mile 635 in great condition (needing the ride height correcting admittedly, and if this car is good otherwise) with work done seems like a reasonable 10-20k car to me.

I find it amazing how some justify the prices of some of these old barges. Most look like £5k to me. Yes I know many have gone mental but I'm not overly keen to join them. #realitycheck

There's a big gap between £10k and £20k though (stating the bleedin' obvious).

These haven't really moved that much in value in the last 5 years. They are very slow to sell - most of them end up on the market for ages. And my guess is that that one will be around for a while at that price, with that spec, with partial history at best, still on TRXs (£400 a corner), etc etc.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge e24 fan. But I'll be amazed if that one sells for £14k any time soon.

As for the M535 climbing into 5 figures... it'll have to be better than "reasonable" for that money.

ETA... just because it's been a while and hardly a week goes by when I don't miss this:

You saw an actual GTR LM on the road? They are like the proverbial rocking horse poo, they only built 98!

Can't be more than a couple in this country!

I've just been overtaken by an AMG GT and a Boxster Spyder on the Glenfinnan-Fort William road, fk me does the Boxster not sound immense. Merc fairly muted in comparison.
