Do you by law have to slow down for horses?
Discussion
I always slow down and normally give a little wave... Just in case she's a hottie ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Driving past in the TVR can be quite interesting though as it's only really coasting in neutral that'll satisfy the "be quiet" advice as the exhaust pops and bangs like a Gatling gun if it's under 3k rpm!
First time I tried wasn't so successful, with me rolling past slowly, then at the same speed, giving them a wave and a smile before gradually fading back. Can u class it as an aborted overtake if its done at 5mph![hehe](/inc/images/hehe.gif)

Horse = nervous and sometimes highly strung animal. Usually ridden by women who can also be highly strung and prone to irrational outbursts. Not a good combination really.
However, I encounter horses regularly and seldom have any problem. I suppose from the riders prospective, they have to try and gauge how different drivers will react to them. It must be difficult, especially on a fairly busy road.
Sometimes it can become tedious if I find myself in contact with them too frequently. It's like slow down on the road, stop and switch off engine if I'm green laning and then out walking I'm expected to put the dog on a lead and stand to one side to let the horses past. One almost feel that the riders expect the public to constantly inconvenience themselves so they can enjoy their hobby horses. They then go mental when some pople don't or won't comply.

i used to ride and a friend owns a local racing yard - so i'm well aware of all aspects
i slow down/turn off audio and wait until there is sufficient space to allow me to pass as far from the animals as possible
99% of riders show their appreciation but the other 1% are a bloody nightmare
usually older women with horse like facial features and the cut glass accent that will shatter a wine glass!
obnoxious/haughty/arrogant b
hes - usually wearing a head scarf rather than a 'hard hat'
i've had more than a few words with these 'types'
lets face it horses are pretty stupid - my last one was terrified of blackbirds - god knows why? - and only blackbirds not other 'black coloured' birds!!
the one before had issues with rabbits - but schooling sorted that out

I think you should get off your High Horse and read the OP again, I dont think OP did anything wrong, (in the first incident at least).![](/inc/images/censored.gif)

I once read about a driver who took a horse's leg off. The horse rider hit the roof of his car with his hand because he thought he was passing too fast, couldn't have been going that fast for him to hit the car. The driver reversed back in a temper to confront the rider, hit the horse and took its leg off.
It makes sense to slow down and give horses a wide berth. They are at the end of the day living breathing animals and can be quite unpredictable. Even horses that aren't normally nervous can have their moments if something bothers them. I've been on horses that have been startled by hedgerows blowing gently in the wind, and seeing their own shadows. I think they are just naturally fearful despite their size.

Must have been a 4x4 and the rider must have had very long arms..... ![redface](/inc/images/redface.gif)
I grew up in t'country. Lots of little lanes with high hedges.
I always slow right down, music down as per the OP and give them a wide birth. I think that is acceptable. Given I grew up there, I also stop and let others past and even offer to back up.
Not something I experience now I live in London. ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)

all your life, fine you had a joke a school with a girl that went wrong and you got told off, get over it! now because of getting a gob full from the same family, who incidentally blame you (rightly or wrongly) for trying to poison their horses, your going to go out of your way to cause them and the animals distress when you see them? grow up!
your not going to do any of the things you have said now are you? its ok the internet is a nice safe place where you can say things to be big and brave, will you feel quite so brave when after burning past the rider they are thrown, paralysed, for example and they are within their rights to report you for continual harassment and screw you over for deliberate for endangerment and causing injuries thats lets face it were completely avoidable.
given your history with the family and your recent posts i am sure they will have a field day with you...
try living in the New forest, it is just an everyday occurrence slow down pass safely for all concerned and get on with your day, is it that much of an inconvenience? if you still get s
t then fine be content with having the moral high ground and leave it at that.

I hate the b
d things in all honesty. Always walking round our housing estate in Staffordshire, leaving their s
te all over the road. I always knock the '28i into stealth mode when they are around (not so much slow down, but get the engine as close to tickover as practical), but I still don;t think they should be on the road. It's not good for other road users, and it can't be good for the horse having to walk all that distance on tarmac just cos little Tabitha wants to go out and play with other road users.
Keep them in fields imo. Like the rest of the f
king animals we keep. OP was in teh right imo, it was the horse owner who needs a smack for being a penis. If it's nervous around cars, dont take it where loads of cars will be.

Horses not allowed on roads? it'll never happen....If your super rich in this country, your into horses. The royals, the MPs, the lords, every hooty tooty snob that walks on British soil, every (as above) Tabitha, Elizabeth, Tarquin and Harry.... And yes you do of course get your "wannabes".
My problem is not slowing down for horses as such, as I will always drop to 5 mph and be safe when I spot them, even give a little wave if they're lucky.
My problem with horses is when I am driving fast around country lanes and come round the corner and meet one, and you get that "oh f
k, horse!" moment as they are going soooo slow and take up most of the road, it's so dangerous and I really do fear ze horses.
Same to a lesser extent cyclists, problem is they all like to use the roads on a sunny day as much as I do and if I was driving sensibly it obviosuly wouldn't be such an issue. But omg please f
k off and stick to cross country lol

On those narrow lanes I'd rather a horse or a cyclist around the corner, than a Transit or BMW X5 doing 90mph in the opposite direction.![](/inc/images/censored.gif)

That's a fair point! To be perfectly honest in an ideal world I'd ban all horses and cylcists from the road and whilst I was at it, all other road users as well ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Or Alex Roy style I would be rich enough to afford a helicopter that follows me around everywhere that radios in when theres a transit/horse/clyclist/spike trap coming up.
