Things haven't changed at all you often see some special metal in Guildford on North street.
Thats quite an understatement, often see Lambos, Maseratis etc but quite often some rare treats too. This is of course offset by the horrific bearded lady you often see in the same area (i kid you not)...
ah, the bearded lady. Have you seen her facebook page??

"whereas with the later cars Lister shifted the headlamps backwards a few inches and brought the edge of the bonnet down to meet the bumper - presumably in an effort to [b}reduce frontal area[/b] and increase top speed."

Whats the penalty for working at a Motoring website and knowing nothing about basic areodynamics (or editing)? :-)

Top car BTW.
I spoke with a chap who used to work with Laurence Pearce who told me that's the reason they altered the front on the later cars. Please feel free to put us right smile
I think he objects to the phrase "reduce frontal area". Frontal area is just the overall silhouette as viewed from directly ahead/behind. So while the bonnet mod probably reduces the drag coefficient, it does not change the frontal area.

Maybe the lead picture was changed from my burgundy car in case I wanted some dough for them using it but I don't.......you can use it again now. wink

I naturally prefer the early cars with the std front. Mine (the burgundy car) is chassis number 001, their original press car but when the second owner bought it he asked them to fit the 7.0 lump and change the colour (WHY) the original colour was a lovely mid gret metallic.....looked sensational.

Car was built from a brand new Jag supplied shell and I cannot tell you how well sorted these cars were. Forget the std XJS because it bears no relevance...these cars are beautifully honed, great suspension and brakes. Steering is nicely weighted too.

I don't dislike the way a std car drives incidentally just not for high action like the Lister.

Some more pics if anyone is interested

Want.

I'm also intrigued as to what manual box from the early 90's could cope with 700 bhp.

I'm a firm believer that the £40k ish pricetag is a snip. It's such a special car with quite limited numbers that it's got to have a good chance of adding quite a few pounds in the future. Plus I love the idea of a 7 litre V12.

There was one of these for sale on one of the classic car sites years ago, along with a 288 GTO Prototipo. I would have taken the Lister biggrin

That grey one looks stunning, and the maroon one mmmmmmmm - glad these cars get some recognition.

My friend's XJR is a hoot and that's 'only' 400bhp - why oh why has nobody invented a water-fueled car for all these plebs yet? I fear I'll never be able to run a supercharged V8 or a couple of V12s in later life frown

Most F1 ones, for a start. Williams only introduced flappy paddles in 93 iirc. So phone up Ricardo or Getrag and get negotiating wink

I worked for Lister in 96-97 and although they had stopped the conversions by then there were still a few XJS's and one XJC about and I have a real soft spot for them

Yes David but what a thorny old tale it’s been.

Mine will very shortly be for sale but I’ll share a few tales of ownership.

Mine is a 7.0 supercharged Series III so not quite a Le Mans with the droop-snoot but mechanically the same.

Yes they are thirsty, truly epic when pushed but hung in sixth they will lope along in the ‘mid-teens’ just about anyway.

Quite why anybody would want to put an LS engine in one is absolutely beyond me, don’t forget the block in one of these is pretty much the same one that won Le Mans in the TWR cars.

Power and performance, properly fettled they do make their power, mine would certainly get to six hundred on the rollers but heat can be a big issue with all that firepower wrapped up in some very elderly technology

Mine went to Le Mans last year, so it could have been mine that got spotted? It made it there and back so as such passed its test just fine.

Questions and answers are a pleasure, here’s mine but not a great pic.

What were the yearly running costs like, insurance etc?

indeed it does look better in the flesh and the attention it gets is quite amazing.

Likewise the positive comments on here. In fact almost without exception people love these things which when you consider the XJS generally gets bad press is quite odd.

I like an XJS and these things are the ultimate and drive far better than an Aston of the same era.

That car is exceptional, in every way.
I was lucky enough to have a ride in one of the very rare twin supercharged lister MK3's in the mid 1990''s Very much like the one pictured It was owned by a mate who bought it from Frank Sytner. The noise of a snarling twin supercharged 7.0 litre V12 makes an LS engine sound like a moped. The car to this day remains the fastest thing I have ever sat in.

They always were a phenomenal if somewhat tempramental car.

The engine is what makes the Lister. Truly awesome.

Properly cool cars. My mum had one of the later XJS convertibles a few years back, and I've never wanted to own one of my parents' cars more! Not quite a Lister though!

A young fella in about 1992 working the pub game and heavily into cars I used to read all the mags, one month I read about a lister xjs

A month later a bloke comes in the door just before we shut at 3pm(no all day opening back then!) Saying his car was on fire.. I went out and there was this simply beautiful lister. Only thing was out wasnt smoke but steam... A quick check under the bonnet revealed a loose hose clip on the radiator. A screwdriver out my 1963 zephyr soon sorted that , a top up with water and freeze and the bloke was on his way, I dreamed some dreams that night.... And for once they didn't include ladies I had no chance with! The sod could have given me a quick test drive but just having my hands dirty working on one was good enough for me back then... :-)

Some other XJS conversions, as someone enquired about them

Banham

Hyper XJS

Lynx Eventer

And the eye wateringly grim Monaco

There were also a range of more subtle bodykits much like the later TWR editions.
