"But at some point recently these cars hit a tipping point, where frankly crap has somehow become improbably cool."

The article does.

They were indeed very comfortable cars, certainly for passengers, the rode better than modern cars with their marketing led rubber band tyres and "sports" suspension, not sure the driver was having that much fun, especially if the hydragas needed topping up and it didnt have PAS like my grandads didnt.
I agree they were comfortable, but I'm lost when it comes to it's other other redeeming features.

"Ambassador, with this velour you're really spoiling us"
Big lol, great article and some really good anecdotes too.
I used to regularly tune the twin carbs on me mums *Golf GTI equivalent* wink allaggro equipe 1750TC beast. (although ours had the more tasteful and subtle horizontal only GFer stripe). Regassing the suspension was a regular occurrence, when it returned from the garage it looked like it had been fitted with a colostomy bag. Happy days.
Financially these sheds are going to gain about £1000 per annum. Not many cars do that.

I dont think anyone is saying its cool, though there is a little ironic cool to be taken for those whose ego's could cope with being seen in it, I think a lot of drivers think they are "cool" because they have a German 2.0 diesel coupe in white and they just arent, sheep arent cool !
Agree, it's all about time. In 30 years time people will be laughing at ancient bizarre 320d M-Sports with their awful handling, antiquated interiors and bizarre "oh my god it's all silver and black" dreadful colours unlike the all brown and pink cars of 2041.

Cars like the Princess, Cortina etc. were the 320d of their day. That doesn't make them cool or uncool but you have to look at them in historical perspective.

Plus, let's face it, you're going to cause more of a stir on the M25 in rush hour in an immaculate Princess than a silver 320d with wheel upgrade. wink

There was the ultra rare 100 version of the Princess - 100 units given to the best performing BL dealers as prizes which were HLS's with extra kit - webasto sunroof, electric windows, metallic red paint etc. Saw one on ebay once

Memories - me and my Boss had a blow out in an Ambassador (Company car) on the M6 North, back around '84 - fast lane to hard shoulder in 0.01 nano seconds - scared the bejeezus out of us - and I seem to remember it was fitted with some early form of "run-flat" tyres (Denovos' ??).

Altogether pretty crappy cars - even for that period - Ford always did it better for me - my own steer was a 2.3 GLS Mk 5 Cortina - weapon !
So you owned a car that never existed? There was never such a thing as a MK5 Cortina.rolleyes

There is only 1 car that can recover SOTW from the doldrums... and that is a sub £1000 Mk2 RX7. That is the only car cool enough to recover from the dire last few SOTW entries.

Perhaps we should change the SOTW money threshold to £1200 or something...?

the vinyl roof is mildly appealing, but that's about it... what a horrible blue hue!
and gangster gold is a colour acceptable only on 80s german limousines (think 7 series and the glorious W123)... IMHO of course..

Shed is having an off week or something. I am old enough to remember these monstrosities being launched when I was a teenager. They were utter rubbish. Ponderous handling, poor economy and performance, awful gearboxes, outdated and asthmatic engines. The list of negatives goes on and on.

The only redeeming feature they ever had was space.

Only reason I can think of keeping one is as an automotive extra in a late 70's or 80's period British TV or movie drama.

Or more likely... I am moving south to get away from it!

Truly awful shedding this week

Yeah, it was officially designated a Cortina MkIV '80 but every man and his dog called it a Mk5. It did have a different BIW, so that would normallyu warrant a different Mk number.

This means it would made quite a good "shed" then really. No need to creosote this one (although tin worm may be a worry).

Love the Mabassador and was look at them a few months ago because they are reare and different. I like different.

Easy to fix although body panels would be an issue.

Tempting.

I'll bet if it showed up at a Sunday Service it would attract a lot of attention; good and bad but more than a M series Beemer for example.
