It's a shame they don't take to a LPG conversion because if they did I'd have one in the bright Orange colour.
I don't see why they shouldn't be able of running on LPG, they aren't fundamentally any different to any other piston IC petrol engine.

The only LPG conversion I knew of went pop and required a new engine at €8k.
The thing that's needed is, why did it go pop? Was it due to LPG or due to a poorly setup and/or maintained system? Or even worse a setup not suitable for the engine and power output.

If they're in a higher state of tune than they were in the Volvo maybe that could be a factor.

I'm not aware of any performance cars than run on LPG.

I was 90% certain I wanted an ST3 a few months ago, found a nice red one, low miles, 07 plate. MIL has a facelift ST3 in Electric Orange and to be honest it's a great car. Its comfy, very well built and fairly quick. I don't know the extent of the fuel bills but they fill up more frequently than me in a 3.0 straight six with similar mileages a week. Echoing what somebody else said to me it seems more of a GT car (maybe not a bad thing) than a hot hatch. They also opted for the 3 door which angers me to no end as we are a big family! I will say I really prefer the face lift (think it's 08+?) if your budget stretches to that.

In the end I went for something completely different and got a Z4. Just seemed a lot more refined to me and a fantastic all rounder. Plus I'm getting just short of 30 mpg on my short dash to work and back with a bit of town driving thrown in.

Financing 4k isn't going to be the end of the world. It's all down to preference. If you have a secure job and can deal with the payments, go for it. With a 5k deposit if st hits the fan it won't be the end of the world just sell and pay off whatever remains. Why compromise if it's what you want, hell, that's why we are here in the first place because we're petrol heads and we make some sacrifices to drive the cars we want to drive because lets face it, your a long time dead.

£1800 for insurance at 21! You must really love the car to be spending that and £50+ on fuel/week.

What about an RS Megane 225 cup? If you don't have a family you won't need the space and it's a better drivers car.....

I love motors, have done as long as I remember. Thought about what you's have said and kind of put off finance.

I've just been dropped off home in a Type R EP3, felt pretty decent for not having much torque!

Looked at the MPS as said before. The new one's are smart, older shape I think are boring IMO. New shape is way over my budget.

A Scooby is 2500-3k insurance, not sure why it's a massive difference but I don't fancy that lol.

Cheers again.

Bit of a smart arse aren't you 300?

You could've done better to recommend something like your Smart which for a skint 21 year old would be a better starting point.
Just ignore him. Most do these days.

I love the ST's, yep. Think I'm a tad out off nlw though.
I might aswell get something I really like as my renewal on a 1.6 is 1230. Rather pay a few bob extra for a decent car.
It will be 3k finance over 2-3yr if I do guys.

Don't know if it's been mentioned already but the Ford stealers will try to bend you over come servicing time. Apparently an oil change and screenwash top-ups require a lot more skill than the bread and butter ones...

And of course mpg is appalling. I'm running an ancient 4 litre V8 at the moment and it's as good as the ST I had...

How's the 123d by the way or has the new company car been chosen yet?

The 1er's doing sterling service - lovely to drive. I do have to order something new soon, assuming I stay with the company (which is not likely). It's the only car I've had in the last decade that I'll miss when it goes.

If I stay, I'll probably end up in a 3-series.

If you want a hatch how about looking at these... (ok ones a coupe).

285bhp Ford Focus RS (2003)
73,000 miles £9,000
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3436309.htm

Same sort of money as an ST, but this will be rawer and more fun. It also (IMO) looks better, is rarer and unlike the ST will hold it's money far better. So come time to sell it and you are likely to be several thousand pounds better off.

2000 Ford RACING Puma, fantastic car! (2000)
64,000 miles £6,750
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3434112.htm

Very rare and absolutely fantastic looking. A great drive too, although I admit, more nippy than outright fast in a straight line, but still a capable A to B contender. And a future classic for sure. Certainly one to watch residual wise.

That said, I think you owe it to yourself to go and drive something like these:

BMW Z4 3.0I SE ***MANUAL, NICE SPEC AND HISTORY*** (2004)
58,000 miles £8,990
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3072229.htm

MR2 Mk2 GT-S Turbo TBAR 94 Rev3 caribbean blue 50k miles 280 BHP (1994)
50,000 miles £2,299
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3304071.htm

Honda Integra Type R ** reduced £4000 (1998)
87,000 miles £4,000
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3373486.htm

This way you can see what is on offer and give you sort of benchmark to truly compare the ST by. smile

I know what you mean, mine went back 3 months ago and I still haven't decided what to replace it with tbh.

I agree with you on this one, I think these have aged really well in the looks department (much better than the latest one will imo).

Appreciate the effort by you's, some good idea's now, I'd never have thought of any!
Isn't it renknown that Alfa's drop to pieces?

As for the Integra, It's 2700 insurance somehow ? A Civic Type R is only 1500!

I'd prefer something more modern than an MR2, not saying they're ugly though.
Also, I don't need much space, but 4 or 5 seats prefered for footie & work.

I looked at Z4's and 350Z's but too little space.

Quite fancy a hatchback just to get started as my first "quick" car.
