RE: SOTW: Hyundai Coupe V6
Discussion
I've driven one, and the one I drove was up for about £8K at the time, IIRC, this would have been 2006, so they have fair lost their value.
As for those calling them rubbish, well, for £8K I wasn't that impressed to be quite honest. It wasn't so much the performance, although I suppose when you think about it, for a V6 it wasn't all that impressive in terms of pace, but then neither was it particularly slow, and it seemed to have a decent enough slug of torque when I drove it.
It did feel a bit of a barge if I'm being honest, and i've no reason to doubt that the fuel economy would be horrendous.
However, lets keep things into perspective a little here; its a 1 grand car. Its got not too many miles on the clock. Its stylish, and it sounds good with that engine. Full leather interior. For a grand, I'm not so sure its such a bad car, and since when did 8.2 seconds to 60 and 136 mph represent a "slow" car? Not mega fast maybe, but as another PHer pointed out, if it was, it'd probably be a lot more £££.
Having said that, I'd say my last car (Primera GT) which AFAIK has never featured as SOTW is a better steer, and mine was £750. Maybe an idea for the future, PH??

My friends and I all have SOTW contests each week to see if we can guess what it's going to be.....today one of them says to me "ha-ha have you seen SOTW?" ...... To my delight I find that it is in fact my car, or should I say my wife’s, or even more accurately, was my wife’s car.
This car has now been sold and has been collected; I received a text from the buyer: "Would just like to thank you for a very good car mate, very pleased with it".
This genuinely was a cracking little car, i bought it to replace a Ford Puma which was coming up to MOT time last May. I have put in a new stereo, replaced the rear discs and had it MOT'd. It didn’t owe me anything so why not sell it reasonably so someone else can enjoy it.
I have to admit I too was/am a badge snob and did struggle with the thought of this car's badge at first, however I have to admit that the car was a pleasure to own and drive and never once let me down. The same goes for my Wife who also thoroughly enjoyed it.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s no sports car nor is it frugal (approx. 22-26MPG) but for a Grand………a genuine bargain. Someone has a very very good and cheap car out there now…..I hope he enjoys it.

- Note** Pistonheads should make a line of “My car was once SOTW” T-Shirts, I’d buy one

What is the VED on these V6 ones?
I thought they were quite high CO2 therefore high on the road tax front?
Therefore if it was going to be something silly like £400+ a year to tax then I would not really view it as top shed bargain motoring from that perspective.
Just a thought.
Cheers
Can't believe how many of our customers don't know the rules regarding the high tax rate, the previous government and the press made a good job of trying to frighten everyone off 'gas guzzlers'.I thought they were quite high CO2 therefore high on the road tax front?

I think you'll find that 0-60 in 8 seconds is fast by the vast majority of people's standards. It probably puts it in the top 10% of cars on the road.
But apparently PH members represent the entire 10%. These coupes are fast enough that you may only see a handful of cars on a daily bases that might be capable of going faster but 90% will be driven by people who have no desire to enter a traffic light grand prix or make progress other than arrive at their destination. PH is full of people who play the numbers game and are keen to shoot cars down because of numbers in this case 2.7L ~ 170hp is deemed too low yet a significant amount of the population drive cars with barely more than half this amount.
Crostonian,
You will notice I posted saying "if" the car came into the high VED band - I did not bother to look up the actual rates before posting that - merely my 2p worth.
Seen as you quoted my post I looked up Parkers and it would appear that the shed in question would fall into Band K and would therefore be £260 a year to tax.
But some of the later registered Coupes March 2006 onwards would appear to fall into Band L and be £445 - a lot of money for not a lot of engine.
Cheers

Always thought of this as a lesser Alfa Brera - good looks, not as fast as it should be, not as economical as it should be, and FWD.
But that isn't to say it's not a great shed, because it is.
TBF, 5-6k will get you a 2008 SIII that looks as modern as anything out there, and the 2.0, while not quick, has 141bhp and better mpg. You would certainly stick out amongst all the mkIV golfs.
If they had done a decent torquey diesel I would have had one of these a long time ago.

I never felt my old Primera GT to be slow, yet that had just 150 bhp (and bear in mind I came from a BMW 328 and an MR2 Turbo - yes I know, they aren't FAST either, but probably faster than 90+% of cars on the road). Likewise I don't find my MX5 slow either, and that has just 130 bhp. If you can drive properly, then this is more than enough to be hussled, just kick its head in, and bang that limiter
I felt the Coupe V6 had enough torque to feel fairly punchy when I drove it. No, it didn't feel as fast as the Clio 182 I had at the time, but it is a lot more heavy and a lot more comfortable.
And really, come on now, its a grand! I don't think Hyundai ever marketed it as a road going rocket to be fair.

Hi would you like a ride in my car? Its a Hyundai...

As you were
Given any petrol over 2.0 or a heavy drinker is hard to shift in the current climate, I expect we'll see a lot more sub 10 year old decent power motors appearing in SOTW this year for under £1k. Already seen 56 plate RX8's at auction under £3k. Also the 2006 MY tax hike will really hurt high co2 emission cars now approaching 6 years old.
