Have youever owned a xsara Vts or are you just being a tt?
Never owned one... but fixed plenty of the things.

Built from bailing wire and duct tape.

One of my favourite flaws is how they like to lock you inside when the door handles fail. How sadistic can renault be?
Renault? laugh
sorry... was answering a post about the clio in another thread and got my posts crossed.

Citroen Xsara I mean... really hehe

Must've taken sympathy with your predicament about you buying the wrong car because your OH wanted a 5 door model.

Interesting - on what grounds? I'm surprised to be honest!

Wasn't criticising the decision - just surprised. Did he feel that he had misrepresented? Not sure I'd have had the brass neck to ask, so fair play to you!

Yes, he did. I took his word for it that it was a proper VTS, which he thought it was. He offered it to me whilst I was searching for one. I have done a little research, and this below is my opinion, which has been confirmed on the Xsara Owners Club, and is what I have told him.

Basically in the UK, the VTS was the hot version, fitted with a 2ltr, 167bhp engine, but in other countries VTS referred to the trim level. This means the wheels, the seat etc were the top spec, but was fitted with different engines. I think there are diesel VTS Xsaras in France.

What happened, I think, is that when this Xsara was built it was destined for Ireland. It was badged, and spec'd with VTS items, but fitted with the 1.8 engine (very common for Ireland). For some reason it ended up back in the UK, maybe the original owner wanted the more frugal engine, and Citroen returned it from where it was going. Either that, or they couldn't sell it, and returned it to the UK. This would explain the very very late registration on 1/1/01.

i bought it, it was a spur of the moment buy, i fully admit that now though. id wanted a Monaro but most were around 14k at the time and the OH was going into spasm about spending more than 10k on a car so i had to downgrade my options. Truth be told we had a row that morning, i then stared looking for a 10k car and 1hour later id found an RX 18miles from my house within budget- so with zero reasearch i went and bought it.
error.

i turned up, it was super clean and tidy. i lied and told the seller id been to see a few and knew a bit about them,so i didnt seem like virgin meat ready to be conned. i then went on to say the boost on his didnt hit me as hard as in previuos ones id been to see and did he have the car serviced regularly? when i say the words out loud now i genuinly think about topping myself. the deal turned so strange, i think, looking back on it i bought it out of shame and just so i could leave quickly.

This is classic.

Good stuff on the Xsara. Buy the seller a beer for being such a good bloke about it, perhaps!

You've done VERY well there. What a gent. Just to clear up any confusion, the seller wasn't under the impression it was a 2.0 as well as you was he?

Do you really like these cars enough to go out and buy another? I sold Citroens for 4 years, and, christ we all LOATHED Xsaras. When they were brand new the clutch and steering were just as horrible as four year old ones. Just out of curiosity, why would you buy one of these over a Saxo?

I'm not having a dig about your taste in cars btw, far from it; I've just read your thread about the Alfa biggrin Would you not consider another 156? You'd be surprised at how entertaining the 2.4 JTDs can be. I have an 04 plate one I'm looking to sell, lovely car, extremely economical and fast. Would probably accept £1,500 for it by virtue of it wanting a clutch ideally. Anyway, I digress...

Stupidest car thing I've ever done: I bought a 320i for £50 in an unlit trading estate at night, not a problem, drove home just fine. Next morning on the way to a track day I put my tools in the boot, then walked round to the driver's door and got in. No steering wheel.

I'd not had a 4 door car for a decade, and I sort of forgot that not all the doors on that side were for the driver, so I'd got in to the back.

I was at the in laws for the usual Sunday dinner, a while ago, and had to move my sister in laws' Skoda Fabia.

After reversing down the non dropped kerb and then back up onto the drive, I decided that something was wrong with the steering as the fluctuations in resistance, when going up and down the kerb, seemed way more than they should have been.

I promptly went inside and proclaimed to everyone that there was something wrong with the steering and that it probably needed the power steering fluid topping up. As I usually carry around various car fluids in the boot I told my sister in law not to worry and that I'd sort it out.

After about 5 mins faffing, I still couldn't find the reservoir so went inside to get a torch.

After about another 5-10 mins I realised, after looking at the aux belt, that there was no PAS pump, let alone a reservoir.

I went in tail between my legs and was advised by my sister in law that she didn't think that it had power steering. Which had now become apparent to me.

I'm still not sure If I was just being dumb but I was really surprised that a 2002 Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v didn't have PAS as standard.

That is odd! I can understand the boggo one not having PAS, but the 16v? I didn't think VAG were that bad wink

I did that on holiday in France in a hire car (also a 3 Series, oddly enough). Parked next to a cash machine, spent ages in the queue, finally got the cash, rushed round the back of the car, opened the door and jumped into the back seat.

Got some very odd looks from the bystanders.

I was six years into my 200SX phase at that point and had had forgotten that some cars had rear doors.....

In his defence, it's true. He's not.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm about to adopt a ropey Lotus Excel. I don't need it and have nowhere to keep it, but by God I WANT it!
