Have a punt on a future classic...

There has to be a point where MK1 / MK2 MX5 values will start to increase, perhaps not for a few years yet, but they continue to be modified at a high rate, there has to be a point where original examples command a premium.
I was considering this, but i think the numbers produced and on the road still impairs this. Similar to an MGB, as these are still 'affordable', but some 20 - 30 years older than the mx5. You can still buy tatty mgs less than £1k and an everyday driver at £3k. (must admit i haven't checked prices recently and some smartarse will link to an MG midget at £50k!)Mike

He said future classic, these are all classics already..Merc W124 AMG Coupe

Difficult to predict what will be valuable, but my opinion is that any RS Ford is always worth a punt. Yip, a Mk1 or Mk2 Focus RS..
...I also have a sneaky feeling the new GT86 will be a future classic as its had rave reviews and is in a market of one. I could be wrong, but if i were buying a new car to cherish and keep, it would be that one...
...or if I were richer, a BMW 1M or M135i!!
whilst we are on the subject of punts.........
what's the view on the best way to get a vehicle status report, what can be done for free and alternatives
anything better than this

£9/17 for 3 isnt expensive, but if you check ten its getting annoying.

Interesting. I think it would have to be an immaculate example with the original 8v engine. Many use 16v as the old 8v's get tired.Something fun that won't exist again...
I do have a friend who owns a sub 60k one though. Although its being put to 'proper use' at the moment it could appreciate in years to come.

Real racing pedigree, big cult following, beautiful engine and there aren't many decent ones left now. These will command huge money in years to come as they're creeping up and up at the moment.

But be prepared to spend a long time finding a good one thats avoided the tinworm. I personally would avoid 4 star classics they have been going out hoovering all the good big sixes up for 4-6k and they appear on their website for 4k more the following week. They do drop the odd clanger though and sell M635s with manual gearboxes for quite cheap!

I think anything made in short supply, good looking, which is compact with a small engine and dcent MPG will be usable in the future. Something like an Elise or tiny old school hot hatch ticks those boxes. Forget anything large with a big engine, you wont be able to give them away. Exotic badges aside of course, like Porsche, Lambo etc - they live by completely different rules. Think cheap to run in decades to come and you'll be fine, imho.

Low mileage (20-30k) Z4 M coupes have dropped to 15 grand now. Probably less than 500 in the UK now, very good looking, last of the NA straight six Beemers etc etc.
On the other hand I've just bought a decent E28 M5 for several thousand pounds under the OP's budget. It needs a bit spending on it to bring it up to A1 mechanical condition (cam chain, clutch, bushes etc.), but the bodywork and chassis is excellent. I wonder what these will be worth in 10 years time as there's apparently only 50 or so left on the road in the UK now.
