Had a 'diamond' black GSI on a 'G' plate. Paint was 'orrible - never looked clean even with a good polish, then again never looked really filthy either. Faketastic wood on the doors tho nice velour seats - were they Recaros?
Seem to recall handling was very dull, stick on badges on the boot lid kept sliding off, trip computer was great - reset average speed again and again down the M3... twin square exhaust trim only used one outlet. Also raced an Astra 16v late one night, childish I know but he started it, I won even tho Astra had supposedly same engine however mine was one of the few that didn't have the new fangled catalytic converters. Also hated puddles, died twice and needed new electrical gubbins.
Followed it with a red Calibra turbo 4x4, dull again, not sure why I bothered. Fast but just not special enough.

Odd what you say about Ford vs Vauxhall,I think the Insignia is a better car than the current Mondeo.
My wife runs 3 Insignias and a few Mondeos,I`d wager she would beg to differ with you.
The Insignias were due to replace the high mileage mondeos, but as they have proven to be less reliable and hence more costly, they are currently running along side them and will be replaced with more Mondeos when the new model arrives.

Apart from the unreliability(the same faults occurred on all 3 Insignia),the frequency of replacement parts needing further replacement either in or out of warranty is alarming, along with bits just popping or falling off.
There isn`t one single functioning item in the cabin that I would consider sturdy including the electrics/electronics.

Most manufacturers become aware of design flaws in components and generally offer modified replacements or a software update.
GM,it seems will sell you the same old part time and time again, blaming design faults whilst actually doing or caring bugger all about it.

And waiting nearly 3 months for a back order on a replacement pas pipe (itself a replacement) on a currently in production car is taking the piss however you look at it.

Vauxhalls have been poor since the era of this Cavalier, which was a much better all round more refined product than the Sierra.
Ive had a few GSI Vauxhalls,Cavalier,Astra and Senator and also owned Rord rs/xr offerings and the Vauxhalls were all better all round, but that was then.

Driving down our part unmade lane in one of the Insignia will generally make bits of trim fall off, vibrate or rattle and bump steer is quite evident when potholing.
The cup holder may pop out or the ashtray will open or both, one particular hole can turn on the indicator and without fail, the glove box will fall open.
The Mondeos take the lane with aplomb and wont naturally steer from one hole to the next.

On balance apart from dmf/clutch replacements on the Mondeos, one did need the boot release switch replacing.

Makes you wonder when they looked at smart as they did, why so many people decided to ruin them with horrible modifications.

Anyone remember that cop program ages ago folowing Sheffields undercover anti joy riding squad? They had a Cav Turbo & Golf VR6 and spent the night chasing nicked motors round sheffields slums. Dream job!
X Cars in Manchester mid-late 1990's: Sapphire Cosworth 4x4, Cavalier Turbo 4x4, Astra GSi, Escort RS2000, Rover 420GSi Turbo, Golf VR6. Sometimes they ran in tandem with a car carrying a land shark. The scumbags hated them, very little H&S then.

Love the car!! I used to lust after the likes of these and Escort/Sierra Cosworths, R5 GTT, Fiat Uno Turbo and the mighty Lotus Carlton basically anything I had no chance of ever owning and now I can I choose a VOLVO V70 boo hoo!!!, someone give me a slap.
What I particularly like about the ad is the lack of a ridiculous disclaimer that you would be forced to suffer at the end of an ad nowadays because some div once decided to try and drive on water in his 1.0 litre Corsa

Well how about the Sierra Saphire Cosworth - you seem to forgot about that one eh.

Brilliant cars! What was Ford offering at the time, the Sapphire 2.0 twin cam? The Cavaliers engine was well ahead of the game, no other multivalve engine came close (in family saloons anyway)

are these 0-60 you are quoting standard? they seem a bit high for both as standard.

If you're going to compare the 'Cosseh' compare it to the Cavalier Turbo which had 204bhp and 4WD.

6 Speed Box too don'tcha know?

0 - 60 in 6.4 Seconds Which is about half a second slower than a Saph, but it'll also reach 149mph.

They don't blow themselves up anywhere near as often and are a lot easier to get power from.

A 2.0 4x4 Sierra is more comparable to a GSi 2000 4x4.

That makes the Sierra look awfully slow.

You don't have to re-mortgage your house to buy a Cav Turbo these days either.

And the Fiesta massively outsells the Corsa, the same with the Focus against the Astra.;)

Not as much as you might think. The Insignia massively outsells the Mondeo, the (British-built) Astra is in the bestselling top ten, as is the Corsa, and I see more Amperas than I ever thought I was going to.

Maximum Speeds

2nd - 57mph @ 6600rpm
3rd - 85mph @ 6600rpm
4th - 112mph @ 6600rpm
5th - 139mph @ 6600rpm
6th - 150mph+ (theoretical speed - 167mph @ 6600rpm)

Acceleration from Rest

30mph - 2.4 secs
40mph - 3.6 secs
50mph - 4.9 secs
60mph - 6.5 secs
70mph - 8.8 secs
80mph - 11.2 secs
90mph - 14.2 secs
100mph - 18.2 secs
110mph - 23.3 secs
120mph - 30.7 secs

Standing 1/4 mile - 15.3secs @ 94mph

I love the way people are 'remembering' these cars. I drive a 1988 Mk2 1.3 Astra most days, a mate drives a 1991 and 1992 Cav, 1.6 auto and 2.0 Diplomat (now with red top) respectively.

Do we win a prize? smile

I had a cavalier 1.6 gls as my second car. I loved the dash, the engine which revved to 7000 and the very benign handling on 165 tyres. I 'raced' a mate in his escort 16v and thrashed him. Bought for 400 quid and did 60000 miles in it from 1992 -1994.

Sounds like it's time to man up!

Take a leaf out of these guy's books, they wouldn't let a little noise put them off their drive.

And...

I had a 4x4 Cav GSI the same as in the clip. 150bhp was a pathetic amount of power in a car of that weight. Zero,...absolutely zero performance. I sold it after four months and got a Carlton GSI 3000 24v, which was much better.
Think your wrong about that cars in them days did not weigh anything like they do now
i would have thought the GSI weighed less than a new focus and did not have all the cats on they do now,i had a lot of diffrent cars at that time, Ie Xr3i,opel manta GTE, MR2 Mk1.and the cavalier 16v was brisk
I call 0-60 in 8.5 slow. The two wheel drive version of this car with the same engine is quicker. Do you think that may be because it's not as heavy? I don't know.
The 4x4 was slow and, like many cars of its era when compared to cars of today, shyte.
