The only metal panel which differs between the current generation S4 and it's A4 cousin (unlike the flared arches on RS cars) is a very slightly taller lip spoiler on the boot, you can only really see a difference when the two are parked side by side. I can't believe it can make any difference to the car's performance whatsoever but it's also so slight that it doesn't work as an obvious identifying difference - I even know of one guy in the states whose S4 was delivered to him with the wrong bootlid and it took someone else viewing it on a forum to notice - 6 months later........

Anyone remember the stories of the original Audi TT without a rear spoiler ?

I heard that they had to fit one on as the car was unstable.

It's mentioned in the second sentence of the article you're commenting on.
Sorry, I didn't even read the article, I only looked at the pictures... it has been a long day!

With just the little lip spoiler, IMO.

I agree it's a pretty ugly car, but that's just being silly. hehe

Bad angle of photo, not helped by slope but yes it does:

"Clio Renaultsport 200 is also equipped with an air diffuser, an aerodynamic feature normally only found on high-end sporting cars. Air passing underneath the vehicle is channelled via the flat bottom to the diffuser where it accelerates before being expelled at a higher speed. Combined with the shape of the diffuser, this creates a zone of depression under the car, sucking the chassis to the ground. Compared with a conventional wing, diffusers generate significant downforce without resisting forward movement. On a track, at 80mph, lift is reduced by almost 40kg. The diffuser is designed to function in association with the rear flat bottom which leaves space for the exhaust silencer and lateral-mounted tailpipes."

From the press release.
You could have the flattest underside in the world and it wouldn't matter with the ground clearance being so utterly massive. Still marketing works, you're proof!

Down force on an average road car? Add a full tank of fuel, some shopping in the boot, or an over weight passenger/dog ie what 99% of us do and it can hardly make a difference at normal road speeds. The car industry loves to pull at our emotional blokes heart strings with BS like this.
As for the A7 - saggy arse like most of the Audi range and a piece of plastic ain't going to change that. Even the A1 from the rear reminds me of the first KA. Just looks like its filled its nappy.
A6 estate, sorry advant (more BS) is the only main stream car from Audi at the moment that looks half decent.
Where has all the style gone in car design?

Here is my spoiler.

I was told it delivers 1.5 tonnes of downforce, enough for the car to drive upside down at 80 mph.

Im not sure I believe it but as the car weighs less than that, its possible.

1.5 tons? By comparison the wing on a Supra creates 40kg @ 80mph.
He didn't say how fast you had to be going...

The diddy Cayman spoiler looks ste up. Invisible when down. Thankfully I don't have to look at it when it's up.

Wing, spoiler and Renault also has employed a 'splitter'. 'F1 style' of course. A must have for any enhanced marketing bull.

Look at this baby managing airflow into the front of that Clio biggrin

Maybe thats just a 'blade' though. When does a spoiler become a blade? biggrin

Rest assured, it's not developing anything like those figures in downforce.

The only pop up spoilers I like are air brakes, they rock and I desperately want one in my life.

There's something about active spoilers that I just love, and the original (Thema 8.32) is still my favourite

However, I'm very glad they didn't fit one to these:

This may sound mad... but all this idea of reducing lift... doesnt that make the car heavier and therefore harder to accelerate... so I was wondering... why not have a variangle wing which knows if you are turning (through g force and steering sensors) and whether you are accelerating or braking. If you are accelerating in a straght line and theres no wheel slip it could generate lift... or at least make the car netral. Cornering it could generate downforce, ad under heavy braking it become a vertical plank airbrake. Im off now to go and design and patent it. Expect to see it on the badly modded cars thread from 2014 onwards.

Adding shopping and passengers is a stupid idea. They add momentum ... gettting round corners is more difficult. A wing only adds downforce not weight.

Perosnally i think all pop up spoilers are a waste of time. Just something else to break. Id remove the electric gubbins and fit a larger rear wing. One with the rectangles in the ends so you can put stickers on it too from companies who youve had to buy the stickers for ... instead of them sponsoring your master piece.

Original? The Alfa 90 had an active front spoiler 2 years before the 8.32 appeared.

Although being on an Alfa it would have been mostly inactive.
