I have actually considered this. The problem is I don't really have the space to do it myself, and the quality of anyone elses conversion will probably be a bit rough and ready for a reliable daily car. And I'd want to keep the AC and cruise control working which i'm guessing most people get rid of.

Would love one though.
If you get one that's been done by Craig at Dyno Torque, the quality of the conversion is not something you'll ever need to worry about.

Loving that yes

Would change nothing (almost)

Clean......minimal...........almost classic....whats not to like?

low, but not too low

de spoilered smile

nice to see you didnt de badge at the back

Slight rear tint?

single or twin pipes is a tricky one, I'd go single

tasteful front splitter and skirts, plastic or carbon who cares look good

brutal diffuser might put off some, but works very well with plate position and bumper design

oh Bride bum holders. Perfect

If you want an RX7, then you don't want a WRX. It's a totally different drive. The engine issues are different to an RX8, you either choose a car with recent rebuild or keep £3k back. I'd suggest that they are not alone amongst performance cars in needing a few k spent on the engines before 100k miles...

Oh yes, these are fantastic, if I could justify one (which I can't, family life, can't afford to run several cars and all that jazz) I'd have one in a heart beat - love them!

Thanks for the article Matt! And thanks for all the nice comments on my beloved Rex.

I really hope whoever ends up buying it will keep it like this, it is stunning the way Mazda intended.

Thanks again!

When you see one looking like that it really makes you wonder why people put stupid wheels, huge exhausts and ridiculous bodykits on these cars.

The purity of the standard shape is lovely.

Designers of sportscars nowadays could do a lot to learn on how to make something look sporty and poised like this without it being horrifically vulgar.

Ah, I had one. It was a 1996 Type-R model. Such a nice car with excellent dynamics, the chassis was so composed and the note of the engine was such an aural pleasure. One time after driving fast on the autobahn I planned to take the next exit, I lifted off from the throttle and for next 15 seconds the car was rolling and I was treated with a series of loud bangs and flames coming from the exhaust as it was so hot. I'll never forget that moment.

Still one of the nicest cars I've owned.

Wait - you're bemoaning the reliability of a rotary, and then suggesting an EJ20 as an alternative?

You're comparing apples with badgers. The two cars are completely different propositions. All they share is a country of origin, use of a turbocharger, and an era.

dtrump: Thanks very much - I'm not convinced on the diffuser either! It was an attempt to carry the lines of the skirts and lip around tot he back of the car.

Has anyone ever retrofitted an RX8 engine into one? How easy would it be?

I'm genuinely not sure why you'd want to?
Less power, less torque, similar reliability. even the early FDs were >230bhp.

It'd be slower, and I can't see any compensating advantages, so I'm not sure why anyone would and I've not heard of it. A few people have done the reverse though.

Reliability and throttle response were the two advantages I was thinking of.

Blimey - the throttle response on a stock twin turbo setup is a delight, the thought of putting the n/a RX8 unit in would not give you an improvement and you would lose the qualities that make them so sharp.

The RX8 unit doesn't really offer any mpg improvement and is much harder to increase the power on.

The only thing I disliked about the FD RX7 was the throttle response. I'll never buy a turbocharged sports car; I don't really care about straight line performance, though, the 200ish bhp/tonne that you'd get from the higher powered RX7 lump would be plenty for me.

The other option if I wanted one would be to find a way to supercharge the existing engine?

On second thought, you would spend less time reeking of neat fuel if you did that engine swap smile

Unfortunatly these are the only pics I have of mine frown Owned for just over two and a half years and I loved every minute of it. Car was unchanged from bought condition and I was the first UK owner. Loads of mods underneath, including adjustable shocks, and a few cosmetic as can be seen, alhough it was still on stock twin turbo's. I upgraded the rad and as the wheels were in a bit of a state, I stripped em down and wrapped the hubs in pre-preg.

Always reliable, always fun!

No, but I do have a ported RX8 engine in my MX5, makes more sense in a lighter car. You end up with 20% more power than a standard RX8 with 35% less weight to carry around.

Now that Honda are doing a new NSX, I hope Mazda will make another RX7. The development of the 16X engine seems to have gone a bit quiet.
