Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI?

Mileage is at 93K - Surely, that's nothing on these little boosty engines?

Would make a quality first car if the insurance is there...

The Corsa C fares well in a crash too...
Oh, I am not for a minute suggesting that a Corsa C is a safer car. I am talking purely about performance and economy, two areas where that Astra is seriously lacking. A 1.2 Corsa is not even close to being even a brisk car, but it can at least keep up with traffic, overtake stuff doing 50 mph, and return 45+ mpg.

The Astra can do none of these things. I struggled to make it do more than 32 mpg. It was genuinely dreadful.

I am no Astra hater either, I am on my second one!

Should be reasonable to insure? - finishes soon though!
Genuinely hateful things with the 1.4 engine. Crap visibility in the 3 door as well.

I had one for a few days at work and it was probably the worst car I have ever driven. You had to rag it everywhere just to keep up with traffic (no exaggeration) and because of this it got crap fuel economy.

My Mum's 1.2 Corsa C is much faster (which is saying something!) and considerably more economical.

Avoid at all costs.
My bad, had the 1.7 SRi sporthatch at 18 which was perfectly adequate for my needs, didn't have too much of an issue with the rear visibility (other than when it was covered in motorway crud) but it was admittedly worse than most.

Drove a 1.6 which was also fine but can understand that the 1.4 would be a bit power-down considering the weight - much of a bad thing for a new driver? whilst the grip levels are quite good too.

I've seen the outcome of a teenager throwing a Corsa C into a field. He hit a lamp post, followed by a fence followed by an airborne 450 degree roll (no tyre tracks in the field whatsoever) and walked away. Every single panel was totalled!

I'd recommend them as a first car for that reason alone smile

I have driven a few others (1.6, 1.8, 1.9 diesel) and they were all perfectly good. Was yours a 3 door? I found the rear visibility was very poor, which could be a bit of a problem for someone learning to drive for reversing etc.

If nothing else, the fuel economy was appalling which was my main gripe. My current 2.2 Astra is better on juice!

What was the 1.7 like? I forgot they put that engine in them. Meant to be a reliable and economical unit!

Yeah was the 3 door, I found that looking straight back was perfectly fine, the rear pillars did block some view but could get enough info from the wing mirrors and straight to fill in the gaps - harder for a new driver though.

Yeah was pretty economical (55mpg average) put 90k on it in 3 years when at Uni needing only servicing and tyres....but broke when I sold it and had a catalogue of faults that needed sorting.

Seems cheap to me - is that because the 1.4TSI engine is problematic? I seem to remember hearing about them lunching themselves in the Fabia VRS.

Another vote for the Astra (either 1.7CDTI 8V or 1.6). I had the 1.9CDTI 16V, which may be a little on the expensive insurance/cost side.

Managed to roll one over and walked away, make sure you've got good tires on it.
