The M42 still comes to a halt twice every day in each direction, irrespective of lorries. The M42 has had to be widened, and had hard shoulder running installed, and cameras and gantries and variable speed limits and the whole blight of modern m;way running, and none of that is due to lorries.Maybe, you just have the approach that someone who thinks differently to you is a retard. I don't mind the M42 but not sure 'working well' is a term I'd apply. It's taken a heck of a lot of money, construction and delay to keep it running, and it still stops frequently. Still that mile uphill between junctions 9 and 10 might not be the worst bit.

Where the banning is in place, I rarely see a benefit. It is not unusual to get stuck behind someone doing a gnats hair above the wagons.
Interestingly when there are M Way jams, I head for the inside lane. It will move quicker than all the cars sat on each others brake lights. Though what is gains me when the jam clears is probably not much and I think that is in the main for many journeys. Thos sudden jams as well, often due to the amount of traffic and poor driving and the outside lane of a 2+ lane m way seems to be the culprit.

The reason it works so well on the continent is because driving standards are a lot higher than in this country. There isn't a miriad of transport companies restricting their trucks to 50mph, there isn't countless retards hyper-milling in among the hundreds of trucks.
What happens when you have an abnormal load doing 40mph? We have virtually no restrictions on movements of loads and general freight in this country compared to Europe so implementing a ban would affect every type of transport.

How many people commenting have actually spent time in an HGV cab, very few I bet.
You should try being restricted to various speeds with timed target points to be at for the whole day and also with boxes in cab checking how much fuel you can save or how harshly you have pressed the brake.
Not only do you have to negotiate the traffic but for many people on close to minimum wage some of the bonuses from hitting the targets may mean the difference between a family holiday or not.
You may think of some of us as knuckle daggers but every economy needs people working at every level and if you are in that much of a rush why don't you leave 5 minutes earlier as for some of us that's not an option.
I do agree that there needs to be something done to aid situations like this but banning overtaking would would have a negative effect and a speed limit increase would be nice but there would be too many vehicles that may not be able to run safely at that speed... I don't even know if HGV tires have a speed rating.
Before you all ask I do drive a large vehicle visiting customers that are mainly open between 6am and 3pm so that all the lucky office staff, hospital patients and staff and all our lovely children have food to eat each day, a very competitive industry where if I am late a customer will just go else where.

The intriguing bit about the A14 section near J2 where HGVs are barred from the outside lane, is that section is chock full of foreign trucks, yet nearly every one that ignores the signs and pulls out is British registered.
And as all the traffic found out one day last week, if you flash one of them, the only result is that they slow down to the same speed as the truck in lane 1 ... all the way to Catthorpe. Tw*ts.

Lorries overtaking lorries are annoying, yes. But, I think on anything above 2 lanes it should be permitted. 2 lanes. no overtaking!
Then again, if a ban would be in place, people would start calling for all restricted vehicles to be limited to no overtaking and in no time lane 3 would be a 300BHP plus lane only!!
